Geotechnical Services: Geotechnical Services Geotechnical engineering is one service offered by firms that offer geotechnical services. Other services include ground improvement, design and implementation of drainage structures and assessment of the risk that a structure will be damaged by seismic activity. Geotechnical engineers are often asked to analyse the chemical and mechanical properties of the soil and rocks at a proposed building site. They usually have a deep familiarity with the local soil and groundwater conditions at the site they have been asked to analyse. They may suggest placement of driveways and parking lots or recommend construction methods that will help these structures adapt to local soil conditions. Ground improvement ensures that the ground beneath a structure will be able to support that structure. This has long meant designing and building drainage systems so that water does not erode the foundations of buildings or the soil surrounding them. More recently, ground improvement sometimes means adding materials to the soil, such as highly specialised fabrics. These fabrics can improve the integrity of the ground in such a way that future repairs to earthworks can be significantly reduced. They can also ensure that a structure will not shift or sink into the ground after it has been built. Geotechnical services are used largely by construction firms, but are also used by mining and oil drilling companies. The military makes use of geotechnical services in planning facilities and in some types of military operations. Mining and oil drilling companies need to know about soil and groundwater conditions before they start digging. They may need recommendations about how to keep wells or mine shafts from collapsing. Knowledge of local conditions can be important in deciding such things as where to place ventilation shafts in mines. Architects and construction companies need to know if the soil and rocks at a given location will support the structure they would like to build there. Geotechnical engineers who help plan roads are more likely to encounter a variety of soil and groundwater conditions on one project. The ground under one part of a proposed road might be sandy. Another part might have large boulders under the ground. These diverse conditions must be considered when planning paving services for a road. Paving services include recommending whether to use asphalt or concrete for a specific stretch of road. Asphalt is flexible, whereas concrete is rigid. Each of these properties has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on soil, groundwater and weather conditions. Pavement engineering is also concerned about the repair and upkeep of roads and highways. Geotechnical engineers draw upon their expertise to balance the longest lasting possible repairs against reasonable costs for repairs. Making such decisions often requires knowledge not only of ground conditions, but also the local climate. Roads in wet and cold places need more frequent repairs than roads in warm and dry climates. A highly skilful engineer working on pavement engineering will also take into account local or state budgets and available resources when recommending materials or methods for pavement repair.   Infratech Engineering provides total Solutions in Geotechnical and Pavement Engineering to organisations across the Civil, Mining, Oil & Gas, Land Development and Local Government sectors.
