George Meade Meade was in Cadiz, Spain in 1815, the son of a wealthy naval agent. He attended the U.S. Military Academy in 1835 and graduated 19th in his class of 56. He was the second lieutenant in the Third U.S. Artillery.

George Meade (cont.) Meade served a year in Florida’s Second Seminole War, became sick, left the War and went to the arsenal at Watertown, Massachusetts. He left his commission in 1835. When the Civil War started, Meade was appointed as brigadier general of volunteers in Pennsylvania and spent the next serveral months defending Washington, D.C.
