In 1946. WAPET drilled their first well, the Cape Range-1, in 1953 on a surface anticline in the onshore portion of the Carnarvon basin. This well produced oil at a rate of 500bbl per day from cretaceous sands at 3,600 ft (1,100m). The first offshore exploration in the west Shelf was carried out by WAPET in 1961. This well discovered oil in Upper Jurassic sands at 6,500 ft (2,000 m). Bonaparte Basin : Bonaparte Basin The Bonaparte Basin consists of the following structural elements: Ashmore Platform, Vulcan Sub-basin, Londonderry High, Petrel Sub-basin, Darwin Shelf, Malita Graben, Sahul Syncline Nancar Trough, Laminaria High, Flamingo High, Flamingo Syncline, Sahul Platform,Sahul Syncline, Troubadour Terrace, Calder Graben. Bonaparte Basin geological summary : Bonaparte Basin geological summary The Cambrian to Recent Bonaparte Basin is a fan-shaped hydrocarbon-bearing basin extending over 270,000 km2 in the northwestern offshore and onshore Australia. The basin contains up to 15 km of sediments and has a multi-phase history, comprising the southern Palaeozoic and northern Mesozoic depocentres. The latter forms part of the Westralian Super-basin. The Bonaparte Basin had produced 11 GL of oil to end-2000 but only 0.11 BCM of gas due mainly to market limitations. Remaining known reserves are 33.42 GL of oil and 668.55 BCM of gas. The Vulcan Sub-basin developed as an intra-continental graben in the late Callovian and structuring continued through to the Tithonian. Browse Basin geological summary : Browse Basin geological summary The Late Carboniferous-Cainozoic Browse Basin is a large, offshore basin on the northwestern Australian poly-phased margin. The basin is a proven hydrocarbon province, with major undeveloped gas/condensate fields in the outer and central basin and minor oil discoveries on the basin's eastern margin. The identified reserves at the end of 2000 were 0.48 GL of oil, 94.3 GL of condensate and 858.96 BCM of gas. The Browse Basin developed during six major tectonic phases: Late Carboniferous to Early Permian extension; Late Permian to Triassic thermal subsidence; Late Triassic to Early Jurassic inversion; Early to Middle Jurassic extension; Late Jurassic to Early Tertiary thermal subsidence; and Late Miocene inversion Oil families chart of the Browse-Bonaparte Basins : Oil families chart of the Browse-Bonaparte Basins CANNING BASIN : CANNING BASIN The Canning Basin extends offshore Western Australia to form the Offshore Canning Basin (Oobagooma Sub-basin/Fitzroy Trough, Broome Platform, Willara Sub-basin, Samphire Embayment, Wallal Platform and Wallal Embayment). The offshore portion of the basin contains up to 10 km of Ordovician to Tertiary marine and non-marine. Canning Basin geological summary : Canning Basin geological summary The Early Ordovician to Early Cretaceous pericratonic Canning Basin occupies about 506,000 sq km, of which 430,000 sq km are onshore Western Australia. Late Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments are restricted to the offshore portion of the basin and pinch-out landward. The basin has a maximum sediment thickness of over 15 km concentrated in two NW trending depocentres. Deposition in the basin commenced during an Early Ordovician phase of extension and rapid subsidence. Rifting was followed by a prolonged sag stage characterised by widespread evaporitic and playa conditions in the Late Ordovician and Silurian. Northern Carnarvon Basin : Northern Carnarvon Basin Perth basin : Perth basin The Perth Basin is a thick sedimentary basin in Western Australia. It lies beneath the Swan Coastal Plain west of the Darling Scarp, representing the western limit of the much older Yilgarn Craton, and extends further west offshore. Cities and towns including Perth, Busselton, Bunbury, Mandurah and Geraldton are built over the Perth Basin.
