ACIAR’s 2014-2018 strategic plan • Launched earlier this week. • Responds to the Independent review completed in 2013 • Approved by new Government, confirms ACIAR’s independence • We will maintain our core mandate of producing excellent research, and work through others to achieve up-scaling and broader development.
Where will ACIAR focus • Asia and the Pacific • Avoid proliferation of small projects in nontraditional countries • Other areas in support of foreign policy objectives • Explore opportunities with emerging economies, (China, Brazil, India) • Food Security Centre will remain focused on Africa (South and East)

Likely near term projects • Larger multi partner projects; • Seeking investment from GOV. • Stronger connections with other research , either done through CRP’s, National Government • Regional; particularly trade
Partnerships • Strong established partnership with many research institutes • However struggle for continuity, capacity (incentives for researchers); how to reward local scientists • Little engagement with large multilateral programs supported by WGB, ADB, IFAD • See a growing potential to partner with NGO’s, both international and local • Partnerships with Provincial authorities
Research needs • Capacity building • Improving quality and price; knowledge and links to markets • Food safety; Quality management systems; understanding incentive to participate • Soil degradation – sustainability • Market information • Post-harvest management and processing • Pest and disease management
