Genre Analysis of Documentary Types: Genre Analysis of Documentary Types By Luke Brierley Fly On The Wall: Fly On The Wall A fly on the wall documentary contains cameras which are either unseen or ignored. The footage shows real events with little to no narration. The camera is unobtrusive and allows the audience to come up with their own conclusions. The name fly on the wall is derived from the fact that events are seen candidly, as though being seen by a fly on the wall. I t is also common for participants to be interviewed, often by an off-camera voice. Some examples of fly on the wall documentaries include: Big Brother Cops Deadliest Catch Docusoap: Docu s oap A docusoap is a genre of documentary that blends the aspects of both documentaries and soap operas. A docusoap is a programme which follows the lives of individuals, and is often set within one community. They are often long running, as they go into detail about each character and their lives. Some examples of docusoaps include: One Born Every Minute Teen Mom My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding Docudrama: Docudrama A docudrama is a genre of radio and television programming, feature film, and staged theatre, which features dramatized re-enactments of actual events. In the core elements of its story a docudrama strives to adhere to known historical facts, while allowing a greater or lesser degree of dramatic license in peripheral details, and where there are gaps in the historical record. Dialogue may include the actual words of real-life persons, as recorded in historical documents. Docudrama producers sometimes choose to film their reconstructed events in the actual locations in which the historical events occurred. However, sometimes docudramas incorporate some fictional elements. Some examples of docudramas include: Crime Watch Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire The Road to Guantanamo Reality Television: Reality Television Reality TV is factual television, and is sometimes referred to as “infotainment”. It is a combination of both information and entertainment, and first applied for news magazine programmes. Reality TV was established between 1989 and 1999. The genre often highlights personal drama and conflict to a much greater extent than other documentaries. Some examples of reality television include: Miami Ink Real Housewives Here Comes Honey Boo Boo Mixed Documentaries: Mixed Documentaries Mixed documentaries use a combination of interviews, observation and narration. They also include archive footage of a certain event or issue. The narrator in a mixed documentary links everything together, and advances the narrative.
