GENOCIDE IN RWANDA: GENOCIDE IN RWANDA ANDY WOOD, ASHLEY CLARK & GABBY TENNERY GENOCIDE: : GENOCIDE: THE DELIBERATE KILLING OF A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF A PARTICULAR ETHNIC GROUP. THE RWANDAN CIVIL WAR: THE RWANDAN CIVIL WAR Began on 10/1/1990 when the RPF (Rwandan patriotic front) invaded from neighboring Uganda. Ended with the signing of the Arusha Accords on 8/4/1993 which created a power-sharing governing system. Even after the war ended the Hutu government in exile tried to destabilize the new RPF government through refugee camps in neighboring countries. THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT JUVÉNAL HABYARIMANA: THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT JUVÉNAL HABYARIMANA In April 1994 president Juvénal Habyarimana's plane was shot down by an unidentified missile. The Hutu government blamed the Tutsi rebels and many anti-Tutsi militias began to form. This assassination set in motion the events leading up the the Rwandan genocide. ETHNIC TENSIONS BETWEEN THE HUTU AND TUTSIS : ETHNIC TENSIONS BETWEEN THE HUTU AND TUTSIS The tensions stem from when Belgium tried to colonize Rwanda. The Belgians supported the Tutsis aristocracy and cemented the Hutus second class status. Eventually the Belgians reversed their support and encouraged Hutu uprisings. 2 decades after Belgium removed its colonies the civil war began between the Hutus and Tutsis. GOVERNMENT DURING GENOCIDE: GOVERNMENT DURING GENOCIDE The government during the Rwandan genocide was led by Hutu extremists. This corrupt government was responsible for the creation of secret militias of young men who slaughtered Tutsis. YOUTH HUTU MILITIAS : YOUTH HUTU MILITIAS There were two Hutu-racial militant groups: the Interahmwe and the Impuzamugambi They were mainly comprised of young Hutu men that were sent out with machetes, knives, and other weapons for "small scale massacres." The government supported their efforts. TUTSI SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES: TUTSI SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES The Tutsis would harbor in former safe places. They would hide in schools, churches, and government buildings. These locations became targets for massive massacres. : eyewitness account of a massacre. AFTERMATH: AFTERMATH Many people lost their families and friends and loved ones in this genocide It created health problems such as HIV/AIDS from sexual violence. People still live in dire poverty. Psychological issues have come up as a result of the trauma. In 100 days 800,000 people were murdered. TURNING POINTS : TURNING POINTS The Rwandan Patriotic Front and Tutsi rebel movements caused the end of the Rwandan genocide. The post-genocide Rwandan government pursued a policy of "unity and reconciliation,” adopting a new constitution, creating programs to empower women, and increasing economic growth and stability.
