GATETustin Memorial Academy2005/2006:  GATE Tustin Memorial Academy 2005/2006 1st Grade – Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Barrone 2nd Grade – Ms. Bleskey and Ms. Minguez 3rd Grade – Mrs. Friedman and Mrs. Clynch 4th Grade – Mrs. Mulligan 5th Grade – Mrs. Payne Expectations:  Expectations Students will be learning core curriculum Students will be expected to meet district and state grade level standards Students will apply GATE theories (universal themes and elements of depth and complexity) Students will implement GATE theories while actively participating in required long-term projects at school and at home (book projects, independent studies, research reports, science projects) We expect and encourage a high quality of student work Universal Themes:  Universal Themes 1st Grade – Patterns 2nd Grade – Relationships 3rd Grade – Order 4th Grade – Systems 5th Grade Change Program Progression:  Program Progression First Grade Introduction of Scholarly Behaviors/Elements of Depth andamp; Complexity Second Grade Scholarly Behaviors/Elements of Depth and Complexity, Introduction of Centers Third Grade Scholarly Behaviors/Elements of Depth and Complexity, Centers, Introduction of Independent Study Fourth and Fifth Grade Scholarly Behaviors/Elements of Depth and Complexity, Centers, Independent Study Definition of Differentiation and Acceleration:  Definition of Differentiation and Acceleration Differentiation does not mean different curriculum, it means we approach it in a different way When we differentiate we use the core curriculum mandated by our district and the state of California. We modify the lessons by using the tools of acceleration. Acceleration does not mean advancing a student to the next grade level. It is achieved by enhancing the core curriculum with the implementation of the tools of acceleration. Tools of Acceleration:  Tools of Acceleration Content Content refers to the grade level standards and core curriculum Tools of Acceleration:  Tools of Acceleration Depth Depth refers to the concept of challenging learners by enabling them to venture further, deeper, and with more elaboration into the area of study. Tools of Acceleration:  Tools of Acceleration Complexity Complexity refers to the concept of broadening the learner’s understanding of the areas of study by asking him/her to make connections, relationships, and associations between, within and across subjects and disciplines. Tools of Acceleration:  Tools of Acceleration Novelty Math problems of the week Monthly book projects Research reports Cross grade level activities Independent studies Slide10:  We always look forward to a fun and productive year in GATE!
