Setting up your online shop

 First, you need to understand what buyers are expecting  Etsy is a place for indie sellers › Handmade / unique items › Personalized approach › Good business ethics › Attention to detail and quality

 A shop can only be as good as its items!  Find your shop’s X-factor › Are you environmentally friendly? › What niche are you targeting? › Do you have a new point of view on an old product? › Unique materials to work with? › Interesting upcycled items?

 Tell your story – create an about page › What made you start this business? › How do you go about it? › Show photos of your workplace! › Share some personal things about you

 Avoid cookie-cutter item descriptions › Explain the important details your buyers need but don’t stop there! › Tell a story about the item › Be poetic about it › Take beautiful photos of your items › Bonus: model your items (or have a friend do it)

 Make your package extra special › Use washi tape, kraft paper, bakers twine, etc. to make your package look more like a gift than a purchased product › Include a little note of thanks

 Be honest with your item descriptions  Aim for perfect 5 star reviews from buyers!  Make sure people on your team are well taken care of as well

 Constant quality checks  Make great items, not just good ones!

Marketing your online shop

 Treasury = a special list with a particular theme (ex. a color or a mood)  Look for items on Etsy to include to the list  Include just 1 item from your shop  Contact the Etsy sellers that you featured  Strategy: get other Etsy sellers to help you spread the word about your store

 Be featured in search results related to your item  Ex. A soap seller would advertise for the word “bath soap”  Budget: at least $5 a week

 Look for and join teams that fit you  Chat with other team members  Share your items and help spread the word about your fellow teammates’ items as well

 Step away from your computer and online world and join events within your area  Craft with fellow Etsy people and showcase your passion

 Open up a Pinterest account  Post photos of your items  Include photos of other related items to get more people to see your photos  Make Pinterest-friendly item photos: vertical photos are recommended

 Tap your circle of friends  Ask fellow Etsy friends to like your shop or follow you  Ask non-Etsy friends to share your items on social media sites

 Look for bloggers to help you host a giveaway  Ideal people to contact: Fashion bloggers and mom bloggers
