MISS ATOM 2009 Russia's Nuclear Bombshells Female employees from Russia's nuclear energy industry are competing for the Miss Atom 2009 title this month. The event's sponsors hope the beauty pageant will help dispel the industry's negative image. Imagine, if you will, a bikini clad beauty queen strutting out of lake, with giant cooling towers belonging to a nuclear power facility dominating the background. Odd perhaps? Not, apparently, in Russia. There, women working in the country's nuclear industry compete for the annual title of Miss Atom. The beauty pageant, now in its sixth year, is generously financed and well established. There are no anti-nuclear protestors who show up to sling rotten tomatoes at the contestants. Instead, it seems that this bold strategy of fusing atomic energy and Russian bombshells is just another part of life -- or at least a marvelous ploy. "We want to show the general public that the nuclear industry is an industry like any other," Ilya Platonov, who heads up Nuclear.Ru which runs the event, told ABC News. "Ordinary people work in it, including young, attractive women." Platonov also admits that the pageant is also an image campaign aimed at dispelling the image of a dangerous and threatening nuclear power industry. The range of contestants for "Miss Atom 2009" is vast. Many look quite ordinary, lacking the perfect features often associated with beauty contests. Several, though, are astonishingly beautiful. In profile photos, some sling themselves across cars and desks or strike sexy poses in front of machines and oceanscape backgrounds while others wear silly hats or simply sit at office desks. 02/13/09 Prominent Orchard Park man ………..charged with beheading his wife Bufflao News Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband — an influential member of the local Muslim community — reported her death to police Thursday. Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder. Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body. Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light . The killing apparently occurred some time late Thursday afternoon. Detectives still are looking for the murder weapon. "Obviously, this is the worst form of domestic violence possible," Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said today. Authorities say Aasiya Hassan recently had filed for divorce from her husband. "She had an order of protection that had him out of the home as of Friday the 6th [of February]," Benz said.

Homeowners' rallying cry: Produce the note ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. (AP) — Kathy Lovelace lost her job and was about to lose her house, too. But then she made a seemingly simple request of the bank: Show me the original mortgage paperwork. And just like that, the foreclosure proceedings came to a standstill. Lovelace and other homeowners around the country are managing to stave off foreclosure by employing a strategy that goes to the heart of the whole nationwide mess. During the real estate frenzy of the past decade, mortgages were sold and resold, bundled into securities and peddled to investors. In many cases, the original note signed by the homeowner was lost, stored away in a distant warehouse or destroyed. Persuading a judge to compel production of hard-to-find or nonexistent documents can, at the very least, delay foreclosure, buying the homeowner some time and turning up the pressure on the lender to renegotiate the mortgage.

Parents appeal Wichita school's 'English only' policy The Associated Press WICHITA | Hispanic parents are appealing a federal judge's ruling upholding a Catholic school's policy requiring students to speak only English while in school. The appeal to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals was filed Tuesday by three families who sued the Catholic Diocese of Wichita seeking to ban the policy at St. Anne's Catholic School. U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten found in favor of the diocese in August, ruling the English-only policy does not in itself create a hostile learning environment. His written ruling was issued last month. The lawsuit was filed by parents Mike and Clara Silva, Maria and Fermin Fernandez and Guadalupe Cruz-Tello on behalf of their minor children. The three children at the center of the case were sixth-graders when St. Anne Catholic School adopted the policy in September 2007. Named as defendants were the St. Anne Principal Margaret Nugent and the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. Posted on Tue, Feb. 17, 2009 01:14 PM

Latin American leaders say U.S. drug war a failure Reuters February 12, 2009 RIO DE JANEIRO — The war against drugs is failing and the U.S. government should break with "prohibition" policies that have achieved little more than cram its prisons and stoke violence, three former Latin American presidents said on Wednesday. The respected former presidents urged the United States and Latin American governments to move away from jailing drug users to debate the legalization of marijuana and place more emphasis on the treatment of addicts. Former Colombian President Cesar Gaviria said there was no meaningful debate over drugs policy in the United States, despite a broad consensus that current policies had failed. "The problem today in the U.S. is that narco-trafficking is a crime and so any politician is fearful of talking about narco-trafficking or talking about policies because they will be called soft," he said. Gaviria has joined with former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso and former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo to try to change the debate on drugs in Latin America, where trafficking gangs have killed tens of thousands of people and weakened democracies through corruption. From Mexico's gang wars to the drug-funded FARC guerrilla group in Colombia and daily shoot-outs between gangs and police in Rio de Janeiro's shantytowns, much of the region is scarred by drug violence and many believe U.S. policies have failed. A United Nations meeting in Vienna next month will frame international drugs policy for the next 10 years, and the three former presidents, whose group is called the Latin American Commission on Drugs and Democracy, said it is time for change. They pointed to falling street prices for cocaine and still high levels of consumption in the United States despite decades of policies focused on punishing users and cutting supplies from Latin American countries such as Colombia.

Cocaine cheaper than lager and wine as drug price falls by half A line of cocaine is now cheaper than a pint of lager or a glass of wine, official figures have disclosed.   Telegraph 12 Feb 2009 England- The Home Office has admitted that the street price of both cocaine and heroin has fallen by nearly half in the last ten years, making the most dangerous illegal drugs cheaper than they have ever been. Based on reports from police forces, the Home Office said that cocaine is now being sold for as little as £20 a gram in some parts of the country. The most common price for the drug is £40 per gram. Home Office figures for 1998 show the average price was £77. A gram of heroin can now be bought for as little as £25, with the average price somewhere between £40 and £50 per gram. In 1998, the average was £74. According to DrugScope, a charity that provides research and advice on drugs policy, gram of cocaine can make between 10 and 20 lines for snorting, depending on its strength. That means a line of cocaine can cost as little as £1, with an average price per line of between £2 and £4. The average price of a pint of lager is around £2.75, although some pub chains have reacted to the credit crunch by cutting the price of a pint as low as 99p. A glass of wine typically costs £3.50.

The Audacity of Dope Could legal marijuana save California’s economy?     February 11, 2009   Some legislators in California have pot on their minds, too. That's because the government of the biggest economy in the United States is facing a massive budget deficit whose pain would be alleviated by decriminalizing marijuana . California's current deficit stands at a whopping $15 billion and is expected to reach $42 billion next year . And the state run by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has virtually run out of cash. It recently delayed $3.5 billion of payments to taxpayers and counties. While nearly all U.S. states currently face budget shortfalls, California's deficit is more than one-third of its general fund. That's largely due to its dependence on income taxes, which slide during a recession. And the state can't easily borrow due to the government bond-market freeze. Moody's even warned it may downgrade the state's rating . Marijuana is California's largest cash crop. It's valued at $14 billion annually, or nearly twice the value of the state's grape and vegetable crops combined, according to government statistics. Indeed, a recent report pegged marijuana as two-thirds of the economy of Mendocino County, a ganja hotbed north of San Francisco. That's not surprising— it costs $400 to grow a pound of pot that can sell for $6,000 on the street . Of course, just legalizing pot wouldn't automatically harvest revenues for the state. An organized system of regulating sales and collecting taxes would need implementing. And it's possible that general drug use could rise, though the debate that pot is a gateway drug to harder substances is inconclusive. So what are the numbers? A national legalization effort would save nearly $13 billion annually in enforcement costs and bring in $7 billion in yearly tax revenues, according to a study by Harvard University economist Jeffrey Miron . Since California represents 13 percent of the U.S. economy, those numbers suggest the state could save $1.7 billion in enforcement costs and nab up to $1 billion in revenues. That doesn't include any indirect revenues as, for example, rural farming communities grow or marijuana tourism, which has been lucrative for the Netherlands, takes off. Put it all together, and California could potentially wipe some $3 billion off its budget deficit by letting its people puff and pay. That still leaves it with a gaping $39 billion hole to fill, so the state's problems go far beyond what a new cash crop can fix. But anything to help soothe the state's chronic fiscal pain—even if unpalatable to some—is worth considering.

FEBRUARY 13- -While a South Carolina sheriff would apparently like to bust Michael Phelps for his role in Bonggate, investigators have so far had to settle for collaring several young alleged pot enthusiasts, none of whom actually has been charged with anything to do with the November party attended by the Olympic champion. The above mug shots are of the six arrestees (aged 17-24) who were rounded up this week in a crackdown triggered by the publication of the Phelps photo (a seventh person, a 23-year-old woman, was only cited for pot possession). Several of the residents were popped by the Richland County Sheriff's Department at the Columbia home where Phelps partied last year. Most were released after posting $570 on the misdemeanor count. One defendant had to post $832.50 because he was also charged with possession of a fake ID.

The supergun that kills from a mile – 16th February 2009 British Army snipers call it 'the Silent Assassin' and it is the weapon the Taliban fear the most. The man with the world's longest ear hair Tuesday, February 17, 2009 It's important to have a goal in life. Indian grocer Radhakant Baijpai certainly has one - to make sure that he has the longest ear hair in the world. Radhakant was crowned the official Guinness world record holder for the longest ear hair back in 2003, when his aural fronds were an already-impressive 13.2cm long. But that didn't stop him pursuing his goal of ever-longer hair on his ears. After several more years of carefully cultivating and caring for the ear-hair, Radhakant's tufts now stretch an astonishing 25cm. He is now waiting for Guinness adjudicators to confirm that he has set a new high, hairy bar for his chosen field. Radhakant, from Uttar Pradesh in northern India, acknowledges that his wife has, at times, wished that he would cut his ear hair off - but he says that she has agreed to let him keep it, as it is a source of pride. His 25-year-old son is already displaying signs of growing similar ear-hair - although only time will tell if the son can eventually take the place of the father, standing triumphant atop the pinnacle of human ear-hair achievement.

The shy lad, whose voice has not yet broken, said: “I thought it would be good to have a baby. “I didn’t think about how we would afford it. I don’t really get pocket money. My dad sometimes gives me $12.”

Two charged after extensive graffiti found February 17, 2009    Wednesday, February 18, 2009 GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- Two men who were walking with spray paint, gloves and a book of graffiti images were arrested early Tuesday, a day after police received a number of complaints about graffiti around the city, police said. A number of buildings in the city's east end and downtown were spraypainted with words and designs late Sunday and early Monday, part of an increase in graffiti around Glens Falls and Queensbury that has been seen in recent weeks, said Glens Falls Police Sgt. Keith Knoop. "We got hit pretty hard Sunday night. We got reports about a lot of businesses, homes, garages with graffiti," Knoop said. Police developed a list of potential suspects Monday based on similar activity in the past, and spotted one of those men walking on Bay Street about 12:25 a.m. Tuesday, Knoop said. With him was a teen who had been seen walking in Glens Falls late Sunday, Knoop said. When Glens Falls Police officers Seth French and Brian Lashway went to question them, they found the two had spray paint, markers of the type often used for tagging, that they were wearing rubber gloves and one had a book of graffiti images, Knoop said. They also had what appeared to be spray paint on their clothes, Knoop said.   They would not talk with police about whether they were to blame for the recent vandalism, but were instead charged with the misdemeanors of possession of graffiti instruments, police said.

February 18, 2009 Customs agents find 'B.C. Bud' under cow manure A Canadian truck driver transporting cattle was arrested Tuesday as he attempted to enter the United States after an inspection of his freight uncovered several million dollars worth of marijuana. Officers from U.S. Customs and Border Protection detained the driver, Edwin Roy Fuller, 39, of Langley, British Columbia, at the Sumas crossing after discovering 1,746 pounds of high-grade marijuana also known as "B.C. Bud." The value of the seized contraband, which can sell for up to $6,000 per pound in the United States, was estimated to be over $6 million. Fuller's truck was selected for an inspection Tuesday, and after officers removed the cattle to examine the truck's trailer with a x-ray imaging device, discovered a hidden compartment in the floor. According to a news release, "officers scraped off the natural byproduct of cows and endured the associated odors to unbolt false panels which concealed hundreds of plastic bags of marijuana beneath." Officers needed 69 large boxes to repackage the marijuana for transport. Fuller was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, and is awaiting his first appearance in U.S. District Court in Seattle.
