Mr. Richards is a Managing Partner and CEO of the multi-billion global credit market focused hedge fund Marathon Asset Management. His commitment to philanthropy is demonstrated by generous support of HFC, Safe at Home, Earth Day Network, UJA, the Birds Nest Foundation, the R Baby Foundation, and other essential non-profit organizations. Former New York Yankees Manager and Prior HFC Honoree Joe Torre will present Mr. Richards with the “Award for Caring” during the Benefit. ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ HFC is an international charity supported largely by the hedge fund industry. Its sole mission is to support efforts to prevent and treat child abuse. HFC has 2 goals: to raise as much money as possible to fund the groups that address child abuse and to showcase the philanthropy of the hedge fund and finance industry. HFC raises money and awards grants in 12 major cities in the United States, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Approximately 35-40 events are held annually. HFC’s grantees provide services to children of all ages and span the entire spectrum from preventive and educational services for at-risk families to forensic interviews and treatment of children who have already experienced physical and/or sexual abuse. HFC generally funds smaller, communitybased organizations, where private grants have a profound impact. Rob Davis founded HFC in 1998 to prevent and treat child abuse and to counteract the negative public image of the hedge fund industry, calling attention to the industry’s generosity and philanthropy. Annually, approximately $3.3 million is awarded in grants to over 100 organizations. ▪ 2010: $3.3 million through 96 grants ▪ 2011: $3.8 million through 106 grants ▪ 2012: $4.2 million through 115 grants (2013 grants are still being awarded) Since inception, HFC has awarded more than 1000 grants totaling over $37 million. HFC maintains very low admin, over 90% of money raised goes to funding child abuse programs. HFC is largely a volunteer-driven organization, with professionals from the hedge fund industry serving on the Board and on local committees that plan events and evaluate grant proposals. The organization has a small staff of 7 based in New York City. Scope of the Problem ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ Annually in the United States, there are over 3.3 million reported incidents of abuse involving as many as 6 million children, although the actual number is estimated to be several times higher. Most at risk for abuse are children under the age of 3 years old. Abuse is the 3rd leading cause of death for this population. In the U.S. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys is sexually abused by age 18. Unlike every other childhood cause, child abuse lacks a natural parental constituency to provide advocacy and funding. The Hedge Fund industry is the only constituency to stand up for these children. Children with disabilities are 54% more likely to be victimized than those without disabilities. Child abuse cuts across all socio-economic, racial, and religious lines. Accountability and Due Diligence ▪ ▪ HFC has a rigorous evaluation and due diligence process for potential grantees. In every branch and affiliate, HFC hires an academic consultant who is a child welfare expert in that area. The academic consultant trains the Grant Selection Committee, made up of staff and volunteers, and carefully vets every grantee to ensure that they are targeting child abuse and neglect in the most effective way. Grantees provide detailed and periodic reports on how funds are used and each organization receives an evaluative site visit annually. 330 7th Avenue, Suite 2B | New York, NY 10001 | 212.991.9600 | HFC.org
