Presentation on: FACILITY LAYOUT Presented by : Prashant Ranka B.B.A. 6th sem.
Facility layout refers to an arrangement of physical facilities in such a manner so as to have quickest flow of material at the lowest cost and with the least amount of handling in processing the product.
A well designed layout is one that can be beneficial in achieving the following objectives: Proper and efficient utilization of available floor space. Transportation of work from one point to another point without any delay. Proper utilization of production capacity. Reduce material handling costs. Utilize labour efficiently. Reduce accidents.

Also known as functional layout. Similar machines / operations are located at one place as per the functions. Useful for job production .
Varied degree of machine utilization. There is greater scope of expansion. High product variety can be easily handled. Breakdown of one machine does not result in total stoppage of production. Easy maintenance. Different departments.
High degree of material handling. Little costly Skilled workers are required. Total cycle time is high. Inspection is more frequent. Production planning and control is relatively difficult.
Also known as line layout. Various facilities are located in sequence. Used for continuous operations. There should be no points where one line crosses another line. All the operations should be included in the line.
Reduction in material handling. Economy in manufacturing time. Better production control. Require less floor area per unit of production. Work-in-progress is reduced and so on investment. Early detection of mistakes.
Changes in product design are difficult to accommodate. Product variety is limited. Breakdown of any machine affects the whole production process. Limited flexibility to increase the production capacities .
Materials remain at a fixed position. Essential when products are difficult to move. Need for such type of layout arises in case of extremely large and heavy products.
Flexible with regard to change in design. Essential in large capacity jobs. Very cost effective when similar type products are being processed. Mostly done on-site
Capital investment Long duration to complete a product. Space requirements for storage is generally large. Transportation cost be may high
