The Launching of the Project :  The Launching of the Project The launching of the Project :  The launching of the Project The First African Ports Seminar The Project originated from the 1st African Ports Seminar hosted by Kenya Ports Authority in Mombassa, Kenya in January 1999. The Seminar was co-funded by PMAESA, PMAWCA and the IAPH; On the occasion, the African Ports Executives present held a consultative Meeting which concluded to the need to create a Continental Port Association in the shortest possible time; The Meeting also entrusted the ECA with the responsibility to co-ordinate the necessary procedures and actions. Slide10:  The Secretary Generals of African Sub-regional Ports Associations Mr Mohammed AZZOU, Secretary General of the « Union des Administrations Portuaires du Nord de l’Afrique » (UAPNA); Mr Alex KABUGA, a.g. Secretary General of the Port Management Association of East and Southern Africa (PMAESA), and subsequently, Mr Olivier HARTMANN, as the New Secretary General of PMAESA. Mr Fernand Julien GAUZE, Secretary General of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) and current Executive Secretary of PAPC. The Partnership Network:  The Partnership Network Slide12:  The first meeting of the drafting Committee was convened by the ECA in July 1999 in Addis-Ababa; The meeting was coordinated by Mr. Mbaye DIOUF with the assistance of Mr. Paul WERE; The draft Constitution that emanated from the above meeting was subsequently disseminated by ECA to the Sub-regional Port Associations for their respective consideration and approval; The sponsorship of the ECA The ECA further submitted the draft Rules of Procedures for approval by all parties; The amendments submitted by all parties were compiled by ECA that made the necessary corrections; Finally, the approved Constitution of the PAPC nominated the ECA as the statutory depositary of the legal documents of the new Continental Ports Organisation. Slide13:  The IAPH contributed greatly to the launching of the Project and subsequently to its implementation through its joint organisation and co-funding of the 1st African Ports Seminar held in Mombassa; The Assistance and kind Support from IAPH The oncoming 2nd Pan-African Port Conference scheduled for November 2002 in Tanzania, and the well-acclaimed oncoming IAPH Biennial Port Conference scheduled for year 2003 in Durban (South Africa) are other testimonies of the IAPH multifaceted support to the African Ports. The PPC is therefore the new forum for promotion of inter-port cooperation between African Ports, enhanced exchange of experience among African Port Executives and, ultimately, the advent of “African Port Renaissance”.
