Airtightness measures count You can achieve the same airtightness in a retrofit as you can in Passive House new builds n50 after retrofit: 0.35 h-1 airtight film gasket, external render rendering (outside)

Ventilation is key Ventilation always makes sense: when you remove humidity, you lower the risk of moisture damage • Typically more difficult to remove thermal bridges • New windows have a significant effect on air tightness • Important to use an efficient ventilation system

Building for the energy revolution In the face of climate change, the EU has set ambitious goals The building sector represents 40% of our carbon emissions The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) – All new builds must be Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) by 2020; all public buildings by 2019 – NZEBs must be cost effective over their lifecylce – NZEBs must be supplied by Renewable Energy Solutions where possible We need solutions! The PassREg project 14 Partners. 11 Countries. 3 Years. 1 Goal. Supporting the growth of Passive House regions to implement EU ‘near zero energy’ goals in buildings from 2020 – PassReg helps aspiring regions succeed by: – Investigating successes – Making them known and accessible – Building up training, quality assurance and certification infrastructure – Stimulating the market for suitable products and professionals

Key outputs of PassREg – New Passivhaus buildings + RES throughout partner countries as case studies (Carmarthenshire school) – A ‘Success Guide’ detailing successes in frontrunner regions © Passive House Institute – A ‘Set of Solutions’ detailing individual solutions and resources – International and regional events and study tours – Wider network of ‘Passivhaus aware’ professionals in the regions © Passive House Institute

Key outputs of PassREg PassREg has developed new training for Passivhaus Designers on: – Integrated Design – Integration of Renewable Energy Supply in Passivhaus – Energy efficient cooling These will be integrated into Passivhaus Designer training in due course © Passive House Institute

Activities to date (focus on Wales as test bed) – Research key actions and activities that have led to success in other EU regions – Work with key players (LA Development Managers, Planners, Building Control, etc) to raise awareness of Passivhaus – Investigate ways of funding/ justifying any cost uplifts (lifecycle costing) – Help with the initial design principles of a pilot project, with additional focus on use of local resources & supply chain – Investigate reasons for differences in calculation methods (PHPP vs NCM) for greater clarity amongst building professionals – Roll out regional training for designers and tradespeople Strategies and policies for implementation Awareness raising with LAs Overcome financial difficulties Overcome technical difficulties Training for industry

Burry Port Primary School Passivhaus pilot – Council piloting Passivhaus on a new primary school (extension, <1000m2) – Reduced running costs and high energy efficiency – Occupant comfort and internal environment important – Would like to implement the principles (at least) on future projects

Key features of the school from initial feasibility – Large southerly glazed area for winter solar gains (shading for summer) – Partial two storey arrangement helped to improve surface area: volume ratio – Very low U values: – Walls: 0.101 W/m2K – Roof: 0.101 W/m2K – Floor: 0.130 W/m2K – Very low (aiming for zero) thermal bridging – Airtightness (max) 0.6 ac/h – Architects (Archetype) will investigate cross flow and night cooling strategies
