Inez McQueen Theotis Taylor Steven Jackson State Of The Economy State Of The Economy : 10/11/2009 Visions of Roseland 4 State Of The Economy The Economy: past, & present Life during the Great Depression – Lessons Learned First-hand recollections of life during the Great Depression must not be disregarded. Those “children’s” voices now plead with us to recognize the symptoms of an economic CRASH and to react in time. Credit mentality instead of paying cash. “Don’t spend money you don’t already have in your pocket.” Rich grew richer at the expense of others. “Don’t pay someone else to provide something that you can learn to do or to make yourself.” Abandonment of traditional values and frugality. “Never buy anything you can use – only what you can’t live without.” Self-Indulgence and self-gratification by immediate acquisition of possessions. “Don’t buy anything until you have twice the purchase amount.” High Expectations by gambling in the stock market. “It’s doesn’t matter how much money you can make, but how much money you can save!” The people of the depression gained a new outlook on life and many survivors still hold those same virtues today. They deny the self indulgence and immediate gratification that come from material things. Instead they focus on relationship -- with their family, with others, and most importantly, with God. They realize that good can come from bad and meaning can come from tragedy. In March 2008, Five States Were in Recession; Now There Are 30 (Chicago is listed), With 19 More at Risk The job market has eroded measurably and industrial production has weakened sharply in the last couple of months. Those are the two key things. The other thing is that retail sales have also sharply weakened In the past, in recessions, you saw people moving from areas that were hard hit to areas that were holding up better, looking for jobs and better incomes, Now, there is nowhere to go. Black Consumers Economic Struggles Black Consumers Economic Struggles : 10/11/2009 Visions of Roseland 5 Black Consumers Economic Struggles The Reasons Why Black Communities Struggle: African American consumers who earn a decent wage shop outside of their community for a variety in conservative clothing at a decent price. African American consumers who do not earn a decent wage shop within the community for a variety in hip-hop clothing which is conducive to gang banging. Neither of these purchasing strategies are beneficial to the African American Community. African American consumers cater to outside business entities that are not viable in their communities. Multiple fried fast food restaurants that are resulting in the rise of obesity and diabetes in the African American communities. Businesses that do not provide sponsorship to the African American community strides. African American consumers ideally accept multiple non-viable businesses (barber shops, beauty salons, store front churches, liquor stores, payday loans, etc…) without question or concern regarding self, family, and community health, or, financial growth. African American communities do not have any organizational structure to gain financial stability so that they can become economic, political, and social players on a City, State, Federal, national, or international level. African American consumers in the community create a communication barrier that stunt economic growth due to independent thinking oppose to being dependent of one another for financial gain. African American communities struggle for lack of participation regarding their children education, positive community social activities, and a lack of strong positive political leadership. Empowering The Black Community Empowering The Black Community : 10/11/2009 Visions of Roseland 6 Empowering The Black Community How Do The African American Community Empower Themselves? Create communication through community gatherings, and emails. Create a conclusive community organization that can help bond the African American communities. Develop a community agenda and mind set which demand a positive and beneficial outcome for our families from every political and business entity in our community. Maintain a strong community member internet email database, and mailing system to stay abreast of all past, present and future events regarding the black community potential health, wealth, and political outcome. Recognize viable businesses and organizations in the African American community that are beneficial to the family structure. As community members; petition and demand structure of zones within our community to limit the number of multiple non-viable store fronts in the African American community. Community awareness regarding Local School Counsel meetings, Teacher qualifications. Demand Parent-Principal email communication regarding current events, student activities. African American communities can and should demand a percentage of jobs available in the community through viable business for which they should cater 80% of the time. African American communities should take full advantage of this recession period and invest in various properties to create viable businesses for the purpose of catering to one another for a very strong economic structure. Goals & Objectives Goals & Objectives : 10/11/2009 Visions of Roseland 7 Goals & Objectives Visions of Roseland One Year Goal Visions of Roseland one year short term goal is to establish a coalition between families, communities, businesses, and local politicians the 34th wards for the purpose of developing strong economic ties. This bond will be created by communication with local politicians, businessmen, along with community members petitions, agenda, and rights as tax paying citizens of the community. Visions of Roseland realize that in the mist of recession in our great state of Illinois an opportunity is provide for impoverish African American communities, mainly within our urban areas for health and economic development. We recognize that a success in two wards within a one year time frame can get support State wide and ignite National attention.
