Elton Mayo By Liam Vernon Elton Mayo BY LIAM VERNON.

Motivation.  In the early 30’s Elton Mayo suggested that motivation was affected by certain factors within an active workplace such as;  Greater Communication.  Efficient Teamwork.  Involving a greater number of people in decision making.  Ensure work is interesting and productive.  Good relationships between workers.

Theory  Tedium and repetitiveness of tasks led to boredom and reduced motivation leading to a less efficient work place.  That motivation was improved through making employees feel important, giving them a degree and sense of freedom to make their own individual choices and acknowledge their social needs. Summary of Mayo's Beliefs:  Individual workers cannot be treated in isolation, but must be seen as members of a group.  Monetary incentives and good working conditions are less important to the individual than the need to belong to a group.  Informal or unofficial groups formed at work have a strong influence on the behaviour of those workers in a group.  Managers must be aware of these 'social needs' and cater for them to ensure that employees collaborate with the official organization rather than work against it.  Mayo's simple instructions to industrial interviewers set a template and remain influential to this day:

Advantages and disadvantages.  Advantage:  Gives workers more freedom at work.  Greater levels of communication and teamwork.  Made for a more democratic work fore.  Disadvantage:  Individual responsibilities could cause stress or pressure.  More freedom means that they have less control over the workers.
