ELECTRIC VEHICLES 6483-TEJAS J GHALSASI TEIT 2013-14 FR.CRCE,BANDRA

Electric Vehicles • An electric vehicle (EV), also referred to as an electric drive vehicle, uses one or more electric motors for propulsion

How it works • An electric car is run by an electric motor, which is powered by a controller which gets its power from an array of rechargeable batteries.

Converting • Many (I.C.E) cars are being converted to electric cars

• Electric cars are easily confused with hybrid electric cars, which are a combination of an internal combustion engine, and a battery, As an electric car is simply run on electricity stored in batteries.

Refueling • Because E.V.s are fueled by electricity, they can be recharged by a charger installed at your home, your work place or many other places such as Costco or your local shopping mall. Charging time varies depending on the type of battery, how “empty” your battery is, and how much energy the battery can hold, generally it takes about 2 to 5 hours to recharge vehicles 1/4 to 3/4 full and 6 to 8 hours to recharge vehicles that are on empty, unless you have a lithium battery which would only take ten minutes for a full recharge.

First electric cars • The first electric car was built in 1888, it was created by two English inventors, J.K. Harley and Fred M. Kimball. The Woods Motor Vehicle Company became the first American manufacturer of the electric car in 1896. By 1912 there were 20,000 electric cars and 10,000 electric trucks and buses in the United States.

Newer E.Vs • The Zap-X crossover; 644 horse power, top speed of 155mph, has a 0-60 acceleration of 4.8sec. and can travel 350 miles on a single charge.

The Rinspeed sQuba • The Rinspeed sQuba is an electric car that drives on land, on water’s surface and under water, its top speed reaches 77mph on land, 3mph on the surface, and 1.8mph under water, it has three electric motors and can reach 30 ft below the surface. Bringing this car into existence cost 1.5 million dollars. It also has sophisticated laser technology which allows it to drive on land with out a driver, it can see the road and will

Indian EVs-REVA Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited, formerly known as the Reva Electric Car Company, is an Indian company based in Bangalore, involved in designing and manufacturing of compact electric vehicles.

Tata Indica EV • Electric versions of the Indica Vista by the name Indica Vista EV (Electric Vehicle) was scheduled for launched in India in 2011. The electric vehicle will be based on the Indica Vista. Once charged, the car can travel up to 200 kilometres on its full electric motor. The car has started roll out in the last quarter of 2008 and in Spain in 2010-08-15. • The car is powered by a 55 kW Permanent-magnet electric motor and a 26.5 kWh Lithium Polymer battery.

Positive aspects • • • • • • • Zero emission free parking in some areas Tax incentives from the federal government you can recharge it at home or work cheaper than driving a conventional car No noisy engine by driving an electric vehicle with a 30-mile commute, a person can reduce gasoline consumption by an estimated 750 gallons annually. • E.V.s reduce pollutants by more than 90% when compared to the cleanest conventional gasoline-powered vehicles (even when factoring in the emissions from power plants generating the electricity to charge the vehicle.)

Negative aspects • Some of the older electric cars have battery leaks.

Reduced range • Electric engines are the kings of limited mileage range. The Nissan Leaf has been claimed to go up to 100 miles per gallon and the Chevrolet Volt 40 miles per gallon on all electric power with an alternative gas engine up to 300 miles. Although both ranges offer plenty of comfort for daily commutes, the road trip will turn into a nightmare as anxiety kicks in with no place to recharge. A complete battery recharge takes up to eight hours and there are limited quick charge plug in stations available across the country.

Less power • Electric engines will be forever the gas engine´s ugly cousin, with top speeds maxing out at 70 mph (even less for smaller electric vehicles) which make them a poor bet with highway driving. Out running a car to make a quick lane change is going to be a hard bet.

Expense Electric cars are a lot more costly than gasoline powered cars within the same range. The Nissan Leaf clocks in at up to $33,000 and the Volt is estimated at $40,000. Both are outrageous priced for hatchbacks with limited room. You can thank the $10,000 lithuim ion batteries needed to run the electric motor. What´s more, insurance rates will be estimated to be higher for electric cars than gas powered cars due to the danger of running out of power in a bad spot, its higher cost, and the dangers associated with electricity. Lastly, maintenance costs as a result of new technology and developing skills between mechanics makes electric cars even more of a costly proposition.

E-Waste Generation • Although electric vehicles are classified as green cars, purists will not appreciate the toxicity of batteries. Not all electric production is derived from renewable energy sources.

Conclusion

Conclusion • Electric vehicles have a long way to go before stepping out into the mainstream as researchers develop new technologies, boost the availability of plug in stations, and other disadvantages that make electric vehicles an interesting proposition but not ready for prime time.
