Description

This skills summary describes how a Technical Writer uses these to complete tasks and projects. With both on-site and off-site over the internet home-based working. This comes from experiencing interfacing and interactions with team members and stakeholders.

8 Skills for a Technical Writer Deciding and Leading - at Capita decided on the format and content of the Share Registration System Build Plan, coached and guided the team on their content inputs. Audit Trail - worked out how to do it from buying the shares through the online Stock Brokers’ website to subtracting them from the Share Register and then selling the shares and adding them back to the Share Register. With Contract Notes showing the buy/sell prices of the shares and the charges. Supporting and Co-operating – with writing projects covering the re-working of an e-mail Hacking e-book, researching and expanding the requirements for an e-mail platform RFP, downloading and discovering how a recording application worked and then adding that to E1/T1 Call Recording Appliance and beefing up the contents of a Tender Policy with Conflict of Interest and Policy Review. Interacting and Presenting – this starts with submitting the Proposal, interacting and obtaining feedback on the draft and then persuading the client and stakeholders on the format and presentation of the document, manual or book, etc. Presentations on SlideShare reached the top 3% in 2013 and aiming for the top 1% this year. Analysing and Interpreting – with two Systems Engineering Assessments, one covered a building, painting and crane solution. By using known local companies for building and painting, employees for the foundations and sourcing another crane with simpler mains wiring. Timeline reduced to complete the project at minimum cost or spending more and meeting the 20 day holiday window. The other covered the Government changing its mind over keeping or extending one Airport or building the new Airport mapped on Decision Tree’s for first 10 years, 10 to 20 years and after 20 years to discover the best Utility figures. Learning and Conceptualising – for IBM understanding the stakeholder’s needs, making changes to the Outsource Contract and gathering data from the subject matter experts. Then updating the processes and procedures with team members input, updating the Service Level Agreement and clock steps. Working out change system Workflows to match the delivery processes and presenting these through Conference Calls to the Service Delivery Teams with support from a team member recording all questions raised that required for explanation or re-work to make clear. Organising and Executing – any writing project needs the data to be collected and then planning the delivery timeline, if during the execution the need for more data is required. The first call is to team members, then subject matter experts, relevant web sites, Google Search and finally the stakeholders for a decision. Depending on the technical level it might be possible to figure out the missing data, but that’s only 30 to 40% of the time. Adapting and Coping – this mostly occurs when a source of data can’t make a meeting for either data collection or queries requiring more data or a new solution. On the other hand having to do updates or work on new projects and put other tasks on hold. This happens when the team working on a new product or service need new or changed documentation. Enterprising and Performing – from experience comes the understanding of how businesses work or need to change to work better and be more cost effective. Also understanding that Professional Development is ongoing and one never stops learning. Doing version 2 of the MIT Media Lab course Learning Creative Learning and started with a better online forum. From contracting comes a strong work ethic and can do attitude that helps to perform tasks well and interact with respect all interfaces. Some of these you never meet face-to-face and are only online, which means using words in response to queries or updates more constructively.
