Reversing the Trend : Reversing the Trend “To eliminate childhood obesity and inspire all young people in the United States to develop lifelong, healthy habits” 2 Alliance for a Healthier Generation Goal : Alliance for a Healthier Generation Goal The goal is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States by 2015 by fostering an environment that helps all kids pursue healthy lifestyles. 3 Four Initiatives : Four Initiatives INDUSTRY Voluntary agreements with leading companies that increase children’s access to healthier foods and beverages and physical activity in their homes, schools, and communities. SCHOOLSSupports schools in their efforts to create healthy school environments that promote healthy eating and physical activity and recognizes those schools that succeed. HEALTHCAREWorking with the healthcare community to address the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity in healthcare settings. KIDS “By kids, for kids” movement to empower all kids to make healthy behavior changes and become advocates for physical activity and healthy eating. Slide 5: 5 The Healthy Schools Program is designed to create a nationwide paradigm shift…in which the perception that a school environment that promotes healthy eating and physical activity is the norm and not the exception. Healthy Schools Program Mission What We’re All About… : 6 What We’re All About… Support schools in the development of healthier school environments that promote physical activity and healthy eating to students and school staff. Establish agreements and build alliances to address macro-level barriers to creating a healthier school environment. Celebrate schools’ small victories (success stories) and offer national awards to schools that succeed in creating healthier school environments (bronze, silver, gold, and platinum). Slide 7: 7 Healthy Schools Program Participation Slide 8: 8 HSP Reach Preliminary Evaluation Results : 9 Preliminary Evaluation Results 90% of schools implemented at least one new health-promoting program or policy. 75% of schools made marked improvements in at least one component of their overall Healthy Schools Program. Schools made the most marked improvements in the implementation of school employee wellness programs and improving the nutritional value of foods sold as a part of the competitive foods and beverage programs. Schools lagged in their implementation of quality health education programs and increasing the number of minutes of physical education instruction. Twenty-eight schools have already reached the Alliance’s Bronze level recognition. There were no significant differences in the results between schools with high and low socioeconomic status. Staff and students arrive at school early to walk on the track, and many others do so after lunch. The school recently hosted two events in honor of “Step Up, Florida!,” an initiative to promote physical activity across the state. First, the 9th graders went to a recreational forest in the morning and walked a three-mile trail. Stories From the Field How We Work With States : 18 How We Work With States Fall 2007 Convened meetings with state stakeholders to: Learn about existing efforts Solicit recommendations for schools to support Establish a plan for ongoing coordination and collaboration Ongoing State Relationship Managers: Participate in key state-level committees and coalitions Implement planned coordination and collaboration plan to ensure state stakeholders are updated on school progress and new happenings Share school stories and data, as requested Examples of State Collaborations : 19 Examples of State Collaborations In California, we provide quarterly reports on the participating CA schools aggregate results on the Healthy Schools Inventory for use in planning. In Mississippi, the state School Improvement Coordinator accompanies our Relationship Manager on school recruitment visits. In Nebraska, our Relationship Manager is working with the AFHK group to provide joint technical assistance in Lincoln Public Schools. In North Carolina, we offer participating schools the opportunity to share their inventory data with the state coordinated school health program.
