Effective Research & Development Management: Effective Research & Development Management Dr. G C Mohanta, BE( Mech ), MSc( Engg ), MBA, PhD(Mgt) Professor Al-Qurmoshi Institute of Business Management, Hyderabad - 500005 Effective Research & Development Management: Effective Research & Development Management For effective R & D Management, twelve critical activities are to be undertaken by a Company as follows : ( i ) Selecting the Right R&D Company needs to select the right R&D . The R&D managers of the Company should involve the business managers to participate in selecting R&D . As the R&D managers are close to the businesses, they usually can accurately gauge what is needed. But if the Business Managers are not involved in selecting the R&D, when the product of R&D is transferred to the businesses, the business managers will find it difficult to market the new product based on the R&D. Effective Research & Development Management (Contd.): Effective Research & Development Management (Contd.) (ii) Planning R&D Projects The company should plan their R&D projects effectively . They should develop a system for tracking the time lines of all of their projects . (iii) Generating New Ideas Within R&D organization of the Company, there should be excellent climate for generating new ideas. Company should recruit competent people, to help the R&D organization to stay abreast of new ideas. In addition, the managers of the R&D organization should be exceptionally good at stimulating R&D people to be creative. (iv) Maintaining the Quality of the R&D The R&D organizations should be strong in maintaining the quality of their R&D . The R&D organization of the Company should establish standard operating procedures for all of the repeatable activities that take place within the laboratory, such as, conducting of tests and documenting of results.   (v) Motivating R&D People The researchers and the group of technical support people who report to the R&D manager should be highly motivated . The technical people should have high respect for their manager and be inspired to do excellent technical work . (vi) Getting R&D People to Play an Effective Role in Commercializing Technology The R&D people should be motivated to do good work and be encouraged to use all of their talents for the good of the company. They should be able to give advice on how to commercialize technology more effectively. The researchers themselves should do most of the coordination with the marketing, manufacturing, and financial functions of the company, to understand the business implications of their research . They should have understanding of how their research needs to be viewed as a financial investment . (vii) Facilitating Communication Among the R&D People There should be excellent communication among the R&D people within each of the groups. The researchers should communicate well with each other, The technical support people should communicate well with the others in their group. The communication between the researchers and the technical support groups also should be excellent . (viii) Coordinating R&D and Marketing The coordination between R&D and marketing people should be excellent . The R&D and marketing managers should share information with each other extremely well. The R&D people and the marketing people need to communicate better. Market research needs to be done earlier so that the technical work of new product developments is not conducted before a market is defined adequately , and More wide-ranging discussions should exist regarding how new product developments could be managed more effectively. (xi) Transferring Technology to Manufacturing The transfer of technology to manufacturing should be smooth . Manufacturing plants need to become more efficient , so that they are able to manufacture most of what the R&D organization has developed. Experienced personnel should be available in R&D organization , particularly in the formulations department, to help transfer of technology to the plants. The Company should not rely on contract for development manufacturing of a product. Effective Research & Development Management (Contd.): Effective Research & Development Management (Contd.) (x) Linking R&D to Business Planning There should be appropriate business planning . R&D should be linked to business planning well. The president should have a clear idea about the business direction of the company. The president should be involved in selecting R&D projects to make sure that R&D planning is integrated fully into business planning. He should communicate well with the senior managers of the company to make them understand where the company is going. (xi) Evaluating the Financial Aspects of R&D There should be evaluations of the financial aspects of R&D . At the management level, the finance group should be close to the R&D organization. The finance group should work with the R&D managers to improve the analysis of new product developments . The finance group should analyze new product developments in terms of net present value , rather than just using the overall sales and expenses to evaluate new product developments. (xii) Maintaining Teamwork within Senior Management Concerning Technology There should be teamwork within senior management concerning technology . The heads of the various functions (i.e., R&D, marketing, and finance) should be involved while taking major decisions. The president of the Company should not make most of the major decisions by himself. There should be excellent communication at the working level amongst various groups in the company , such as, R&D, Technical Services, Marketing, Quality Assurance Regulatory Compliance, etc.
