Gold discovery On February 12 th 1851, Edward discovers gold near Bathurst at Summer Hills Creek. He called the goldfield Ophir.

Rewards After Edward discovered gold he was appointed Commissioner of Crown Land, he also was given £10000 from the NSW government and £5000 from the Victorian government although funds froze because of protests from James Tom but Edward still got £2381.

Death Before his death, a second enquiry found that Edward Hargraves was not the first person to find gold in Australia, in fact it was John Lister and James Tom who discovered gold first. Edward was 75 when he died in 1891.
