Description

I was asked to present for an adult Sunday School class at my church. Topic: Earth Day: State of the Planet

Apollo 15 - NASA 1 Earth Day 2014 State of the Planet A Christian Perspective Elton B. Sherwin Executive Director, The Carbon Zero Institute These are one persons observations and have not been endorsed by any church body

In 2014  More people well fed vs. any time in history  Billions of people who do not worry next meal  Don’t worry about famine in Europe and China 6  Miraculous medicine  Far fewer deaths during childbirth  Safer water and air quality in some places  More than doubled life expectancy Image: Paco Alcantara

However… Challenges:  World’s fisheries and coral reefs collapsing  Challenges with fresh water, soil and food  Climate is changing  2 billion new relatives on the way  2 billion living on less $5 a day have hard life  Do worry about next meal  Many don’t have access to clean water  Many die from preventable diseases 7

How Should We Think About This? Bi-polar world 8

Two Extreme Viewpoints  End is near  Humanity is going off a cliff  Nothing we can do  Ignore the problems  Technology (or the market) will save us  Not my problem  It’s not that bad 9
