Hence there was a requirement to change engine’s design, and there is a need to achieve following objectives- A high degree of drivability. First rate standards of reliability. Long service life. PowerPoint Presentation: To overcome those limitations, a new patent was introduced that is known as DTS- i & DTS-Si technology which uses TWIN SPARK around the either sides of combustion chamber. Twin spark technology was used first time in Alfa Romeo Grand Prix car in 1914. Twin spark usually refers to the dual ignition engines installed in vehicles. Only in Petrol engines. The TS series are all 4-cylinder inline’ with twin cam shafts. What is DTS-I Technology?: What is DTS-I Technology? Digital Twin Spark-ignition technology powered engine has spark plugs at either sides of the combustion chamber. Greater combustion rate because of twin spark plugs located around it. It enables the engines to combust its fuel at a double rate than normal. What is DTS-Si Technology? : What is DTS-Si Technology? DTS-Si stands for “Digital Twin Spark Swirl Induction”. Has 2 spark plugs Offset positioning of ports generate high swirl and turbulence in combustion chamber. This results in highly efficient combustion that further results in exceptional mileage. Engine Construction:: Engine Construction: Four in line cylinder. Engine weight has been considerably reduced by using aluminum-alloy engine block, cylinder head, oil sump and tappet covers. Eight counterweights ensure optimal balancing of the high strength nitride steel crankshaft. The pressed-in cast iron cylinder liners feature wet mounting for more effective heat dissipation Engine Elements:: Engine Elements: Construction of DTS- i & DTS-Si engine is same as that of the conventional 4-Stroke engine. Working:: Working: When the rich mixture of air and fuel enter in the combustion chamber , the two spark plugs fixed at opposite end of engine cylinder generated spark and this spark burn the mixture & that burned mixture gives power to the 4-stroke engine. There are some advance technology used in DTS- i engine which makes it more powerful than the conventional single sparkplug 4-stroke engine like 1. TRICS III (Throttle Responsive Ignition Control System 3 rd generation) technology . 2. Intelligent Digital C.D.I (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) technology. Trics III Technology:: Trics III Technology: Throttle Responsive Ignition Control System – III generation is an intelligent system which can quickly adapt ignition timing to suit different riding characteristics. TRICS III helps in achieving a good balance between low-to-mid range torque and top-end power. This helps to ride easily in different conditions like flyovers, hilly areas, dense traffic and highway cruising. Intelligent Digital C.D.I:: Intelligent Digital C.D.I: The Intelligent  (C.D.I)   contains a microprocessor, which continuously senses different speeds and load on engine and responds by altering ignition timing. 8 bit microprocessor chip Working with the TRICS III, the microprocessor’s memory provides optimum ignition. Improves fuel-efficiency and reduces engine noise and vibration through smoother power delivery. Valve Drive:: Valve Drive: The twin overhead cams, driven by a double chain, act directly on the valves set in a tight Vee configuration (at 45 degrees). Timing of valve train is conceived by this patented device. This is an Electro- hydraulic actuator keyed onto the gear that drives the camshaft acting on the intake valves. The fuel feeding is also controlled by same microprocessor which governs the TS- i and Variable valve timing systems. Comparing Single and Dual plugs:: Comparing Single and Dual plugs: Ignition:: Ignition: DTS- i Ignition? The ignition system on the Twin spark is a digital system with static spark advance and no moving parts subject to wear. It is mapped by the integrated digital electronic control box which also handles fuel injection and valve timing that features two plugs per cylinder, which reduces ignition failure. Therefore, adoption if DTS-I yields: Improvement in Thermodynamic efficiency. More effective combustion. Reduction in sfc. Reduced exhaust emission. The disadvantage of the single spark engine is that the flame front takes some time to reach the farthest portion of the combustion chamber. (Leads to slower burning of the Air-fuel mixture) But engines which utilize Dual Spark ignition will be faster and better combustion. This superior combustion offers both superior power and superior fuel efficiency besides of course reducing emissions. Some Features of DTS-i and DTS-Si Technologies are: :  Some Features of DTS- i and DTS-Si Technologies are:   The engine becomes powerful and fuel-efficient. The expected life of the motorcycle increases. Bikes powered by the technologies are very well resistant to breakdowns and temperature fluctuations. The throttle response considerably enhances. Compact design and Superior balance. As of now, only Bajaj manufactures bikes with both the technology, as it is the only manufacturer in India holding patent over the technology for small bikes. Revolution in DTS-i and DTS-Si Technology: Revolution in DTS- i and DTS-Si Technology DTS- Fi Engine: DTS- Fi  stands for  “Digital Twin Spark Fuel Injection” , a ‘Bajaj Patented Technology’. In fuel injection the conventional carburetor has been replaced by injector which injects fuel in to the engine in a spray form based on the instructions of the Engine Control Unit (ECU) which is a part of the Engine Management System EMS. This technology comes in  Pulsar 220cc  version. PowerPoint Presentation: DTS- i Triple Spark Engine: Here  DTS- i  Stands for  “Digital Triple Spark Ignition”.  Three spark plugs provide unprecedented performance and efficiency – Fast and optimal combustion at part load conditions results in better fuel efficiency and ensures lower emissions. PowerPoint Presentation: The high performance triple spark engine controlled by an advanced Electronic Control Unit(ECU) which is the technology of the future. Combustion in a triple spark engine is 27% faster than a twin spark and 50% faster than a single spark(conventional) engines. Out of the three plugs, the primary plug is the center one and is mounted in an angle and enters the chamber at the top dead centre. The other two secondary plugs are mounted below, each opposite each other and one of them being vertically underneath the primary plug. The secondary plugs fires a bit after the primary one has fired and the timings are controlled by the ECU depending on various parameters like throttle position, engine revolutions, load on engine and many other stuffs. According to Bajaj, these plugs gain an advantage in low-rev riding condition where it extracts the best economy compared to KTM Duke 200cc in similar conditions it gives as much as 10-13kmpl more, however the difference vanishes at higher revs and high speed. Advantages:: Advantages: Less vibrations and noise. Long life of the engine parts such as piston rings and valve stem. Decrease in the specific fuel consumption. No detonation. No overheating. Uniform distribution of power. Increased Compression ratio. Better starting of engine even in cold climatic conditions. Better work output. Disadvantages:: Disadvantages: The main disadvantage is the maintenance of the two spark plugs. If one spark plug get damaged then we have to replace both of them. Excessive cooling equipment required. Since high voltage sparks are continuously produced, the heat due to sparking needs to be cooled effectively. Cost increases due to additional technology. Applications: : Applications: The engine requires more power and fuel-efficient. The increase in the expected life of the vehicles when compared to conventional technologies. The bikes powered by the above technologies are very well resistant to breakdowns and temperature fluctuations. More combustion rate (instantaneous burning of fuel) is required. Conclusion:: Conclusion: From this report, I have concluded that perfect Combustion in an I.C.engine is not possible. So for the instantaneous burning of fuels in I.C.engine twin spark system can be used which producing twin sparks at regular interval can help to complete the combustion. Hence it can be concluded that the application of these technologies in the present day automobiles will give the present generation what they want i.e. power bikes with fuel efficiency. Since these technologies also minimize the specific fuel consumption and harmful emission levels, they can also be considered as one of the solutions for increasing fuel costs and increasing effect of global warming.
