Digital Region Digital Region is the first major regional deployment of 'Superfast Broadband' in the UK, not only bringing improved access to a whole range of entertainment, business and public sector services, but importantly attracting new investment and new jobs – for young and old – into the region The network which is being designed, built and operated by Thales UK and will cover: 1.3 million people 540,000 homes 40,000 businesses

Why Public Sector Intervention? Telecoms market is short of capital Short periods for return on investment The major market players were involved in this procurement but even with grant funding would only progress as a business partner South Yorkshire is 2% of the UK market – the private sector must consider the national picture Currently two major private sector organisations with significant infrastructure 100% coverage

Barnsley Totally Online Totally Online Barnsley is part of the South Yorkshire-wide Making IT Personal project, which is supported by £1.5 million of European funding and £1.5m from the government. People across Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield will be trained as Digital Outreach Trainers – or DOTs – and will work within their own communities to help people with practicalities such as getting on the internet and using other digital technologies. The target of getting 100 per cent of Barnsley people online is about ensuring they understand what the internet can offer, and gain the confidence and skills needed to navigate the digital world. Both Making IT Personal and Totally Online Barnsley are about ordinary people passing on their knowledge to other people
