Description

The greatest test to ones leadership is in the quality of leaders he leaves behind. Are you developing potential leaders?

1. DEVELOPING POTENTIAL LEADERS The aim of a leader is not to draw a following that results in a crowd but to develop leaders who become a movement. Leadership is cultivating in people today a future willingness on their part to follow you into something new for the sake of something great. There is no success without a successor, thus leaders who mentor potential leaders multiply their success. Here are a few tips on how to mentor potential leaders: Be a good listener - every idea is a good idea until you've settled on the best idea. Encourage people to give ideas by actually listening to them. Develop a plan for personal growth for them a) Set aside time daily for growth-short, regular sessions for them to read or learn something new b) Insist that they quickly file what they learn c) Ensure they immediately apply what they learn d) They should work as teams and grow with each other. The broader the base of experience, the better they become at handling new challenges, solving problems and overcoming difficult situations. Strive for excellence - the quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence regardless their chosen field of endeavor; expect nothing less from them. Implement the law of effect - behaviors immediately rewarded increase in frequency; behaviors immediately punished decrease in frequency. Let this guide how you respond to their actions. Care enough to confront - confront in a way that builds them up rather than tears them down. • Confront ASAP • Separate the person from the wrong action • Confront only what the person can change • Give the benefit of doubt • Be specific • Avoid sarcasm • Avoid words like "always" and "never" • Tell them how you feel • Give a game plan on how to fix the problem • Affirm them as a person and friend Be secure - some of the potential leaders will become better than you are and may surpass you. Don’t stifle their growth, be secure in who you are and give your all towards their success.
