Designing a Book CoverDesigning a Book Cover Your step-by-step guideYour step-by-step guide

Books • The cover is the first thing you see. Therefore the cover must attract the reader’s attention. Question: What is the first thing you look at on this cover? Why?

Salient Feature • The image that draws the most attention is called the salient feature. • For your assignment reflection, describe which image is your most salient feature and explain why you made it the object that draws the most attention. Question: What is the most salient feature in this image? Why do you think the illustrator has made it stand out?

Font • Font is the style of the writing used for the title and the author and illustrator’s names on the cover. • The font is important in adding effect. • Think about a suitable font design for your assessment task. Question: Describe the font on this cover. How does it add meaning?

Colour • Colour is very important in adding meaning to a picture. • Certain colours are connected to emotions and symbolise different things. Question: What colours are used on this cover? What emotions do they give out?

Layout • Layout refers to the placement of all your images. When we read a page we generally look at it from left to right. • Some questions you might ask yourself when writing about your layout are: Why did you put the title at the top? What angle did you use? Did you place one image higher on the page because it is more important?

Layout Continued… • Question: Why do you think the teeth in the jar have been placed in the foreground of the cover?

Symbols • Symbols are one visual technique that easily creates meaning. In our everyday lives it has been estimated we see over 4000 or more symbols each day. • Think about what symbols you could use for Skate. Question: What symbols can you see on this cover? What do they represent?

Things to remember! You should have lots of things to talk about in your reflection of your picture book cover deisgn. If you have forgotten already here are some simple points: - What is your salient feature? - What style is your font and why? - Why have you used certain colours? - Why have you placed certain images to the left or on the right? (Layout) - Have you used any symbols? Why?
