Who are we?
Training ObjectivesYou will leave today’s workshop:• With a better understanding of design thinking• Ready to facilitate Design For Change projectsat your school or organization• Knowing that you’re part of something powerful
Children use a simple process ofFEEL( anything that bothers them)IMAGINE( brainstorm ways to make it better )DO( implement the act of change )SHARE( send the stories to inspire others )
The best way to learn is… to DO!!
1. On your paper, answerWhat BOTHERS you?(inside your school classroom or playground)2. Why does it bother you?
3. As a group, pick one problem that your groupfeels most passionate about.4. For the problem selected, each person writedown HOW do you think it occurs?
But enough Talking! It’s Time to DO!!
What would the IDEALwallet look like?
i m a g i n e
1. Answer:Who did you see as people involved in the problem?2. Brainstorm- LOTS OF IDEAS, the CRAZIER the better!- Share ideas, LISTEN to team members-Write down all ideas on post-it notes / in workbook3. Select-Which idea(s) address the root cause of the problem?-How will you know if the idea(s) will work?
• Example Problem: Name Calling• Why does it happen? Low Self esteem -> wanting attention -> peer pressure -> name calling Design solutions for the ROOT CAUSE. Remove the root cause, and you remove the problem
DO 1 WEEK TOIMPLEMENT **REMEMBER to DOCUMENT!**
Design Thinking Process
Document your story. 3 min video to show your –SHARE feel – imagine – do – stages. If any students know how to take photos/video and edit videos let them do it. If not, let them learn. Easy to use Windows Movie Maker (comes with Windows). For MAC, use iMovie. MS Powerpoint is OK too, but not as compelling as video. Upload your video(s) to youtube. Send us the link.**SUBMIT your videos to firstname.lastname@example.org by May 14th.
What Next?1. Run the FEEL step with your class(es).2. By Feb 22, email email@example.com with the title of each of your projects, and when you plan on implementing the “DO” step.3. Final submission of videos May 14th to be in the contest and story book.
WHAT IS DESIGN FOR CHANGE?• It is a global movement designed to give young people an opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and put them into action.• Moving students from passive (“Can I?”) to ACTIVE (“I CAN!”).
