Director Dennis Cunanan, PDAF Inc. Grass Roots (1) The following articles are entries from the personal weblog of Director Dennis Cunananof Philippine Dairy, Aquafisheries, and Farms (PDAF), updated regularly for regular readers for public awareness and for partners in co-branding for PDAF’s advocacy. Grass Roots will contain Dennis Cunanan’s inputs on the agricultural sector; links and excerpts from pertinent reference documents, such as Philippine laws and press releases from both private and public stakeholders; and inspirational stories, testaments from the organization’s namesake grassroots farmers and fisherfolk. The webmasters of PDAF invite all readers of Director Dennis Cunanan’s PDAF blog to comment and sign our guestbook! – Humble beginnings (1) In 1996, what began as an initiative for me and some of my fellow individuals in the development sector to collaborate with Philippine farmers and fisherfolk to make a cooperative for trade opportunities, honing and sharing agricultural-related skills, and integrating technology in the interest of expanding and cultivating natural resources. Our motive was a simple one back then—to help our brothers, integral workers in the Philippine economy, to move mountains, crop by crop, harvest by harvest, life by life. The goal was to improve the rate and quality of livelihood in the agricultural sector, knowing different risks posed by the lack and mismanagement of both natural and technological resources, and accelerate long-term socioeconomic growth among Filipinos by utilizing key strategies as tediously researched and implemented by our experts, our volunteers, and the farmers and fishermen themselves. Suffice to say, I am so proud of everything that we have become. In a sense, as an organization, we have funded not only farmers and fishermen, but also leaders, experts, shareholders, and changemakers. There are many stories that I can compile of seemingly singular efforts to change lives, but these, no doubt, factor into the macro-perspective that the organization takes in comprehensive growth through policy and practice. I’m writing this as a series of blog entries to document (maybe without a linear narrative, just as my thoughts progress) things that I want readers to know about on how PDAF came to life, and why, in an opinion I share with others, it works as an institution—one that wishes to inspire.
