The Tenacity to Achieve “JCI is an accident for me. It was not something that I actively sought in my younger days.” For something that wasn’t actively sought, Dennis Cunanan has already established a name for himself as an active officer in the Junior Chamber International. He has dedicated much of his time, talent, and brilliance in spearheading one program after another the banner of JCI. In 2005, he had served as the National President of JCI Philippines. In 2008, he was elected as International Vice President assigned to Asia and the Pacific in a World Congress held in Turkey. He had also served as Chief Executive Assistant to the World President of Junior Chamber International in 2009, and further on as the World General Legal Counsel (GLC) in 2010. He was elected as the JCI World Executive Vice President for 2011 during the World Congress in Osaka, Japan. His most recent—and most notable—post was to be elected as JCI’s newest Secretary General in the World Congress in Taiwan. The official turnover happened during the World Congress in Rio, and he will be assuming office starting January 1, 2014. Dennis Cunanan was born into a simple family. His parents, educator Amelia Lacson and public servant Diosdado Cunanan, weren’t rich, but what they lacked in money they made up for in principles and hard work. “My mom resigned as a teacher and went to another government office because she was frustrated with the current educational system at the time. She had a high educational standard at the time. She and my dad tried to make both ends meet and made sure that we would be able to study in a Visit our website @ http://denniscunananjci.com/

private school. It was the only legacy they could give us, so they really invested in our education,” Dennis said. Dennis Cunanan has always been known to be an active achiever even in his early days, but Dennis Cunanan said that it was only because he pushed for it that he was even given the chance to get to where he is today. He promised himself back then that, “Time will come that I will rise above social status. They will recognize me not because of what I have, but because of what I know.” “A lot of times, I was not given the opportunity to move further. I had classmates who were as good as I was, but were better-off than me. They were the ones who were always appointed as class or club officers because they were able to donate much money to my school,” Dennis shares in an afternoon interview in his home. In high school, he really pushed to win the student council elections. He believed that it was the perfect way and opportunity for him to break out of his shell. It was difficult because he went to an all-boys school. “Back then, in an all-boys school, the scenario was always ‘the survival of the fittest’.” He was finally elected third year representative, after which he was assigned to organize the Junior-Senior Prom. He was then elected President of the Juniors’ Club, where he was able to really demonstrate his resourcefulness and leadership skills. He later on moved on to being the Student Council President, where he started to really embrace the activist principles he possesses to this day. “I felt as if it’s an opportunity to contribute something to the country’s future, “Dennis Cunanan said. Even at a young age, he was participating in rallies against tuition fee increases, and other activist agenda. “We were all working towards the betterment of our society. If we didn’t participate, then we had no right to call ourselves a member of the society.” Visit our website @ http://denniscunananjci.com/
