A lesson to teach decimals.

Once upon a time, there lived 4 good friends on the small island of Singapore. They were Albert the Lion, Brad the Giraffe, Chris the Hippopotamus and Dan the Zebra. Even though they were happy with their lives, they had long yearned to take a trip on the world famous train in Singapore – the MRT.

So one day, the four friends decided to leave their beautiful habitat in the jungle to set off to the nearest MRT station. They all felt very excited as they were walking towards the station.

After a long, tiring, walk, the 4 friends finally reached the Paya Lebar MRT station. However, what they saw on the signage next actually shocked them…

ANYONE BELOW 160cm WILL NOT BE CHARGED. All 4 of them were very shocked as they did not know if they each had to pay for the MRT trip. They had no idea if they were all below 160cm. On top of that, they only have enough money to pay for 1 person for the trip. They all felt sad and disappointed especially so for Albert .

ANYONE BELOW 160cm WILL NOT BE CHARGED.

However, a nice Indian lady at the Station Control office saw the dismay on their faces and went up to them to offer her help. She assured them that she would help them find out about their heights so that they will know if they had to pay for the trip.

However, a nice Indian lady at the Station Control office saw the dismay on their faces and went up to them to offer her help. She assured them that she would help them find out about their heights so that they will know if they had to pay for the trip.

This is what she found out about their heights : Albert the Lion - 120cm Brad the Giraffe - 300cm Chris the Hippopotamus - 150cm Dan the Zebra - 180cm

This is what she found out about their heights :

Albert the Lion - 120cm

Brad the Giraffe - 300cm

Chris the Hippopotamus - 150cm

Dan the Zebra - 180cm

“ So this is how tall we are, “thought the 4 friends. But then again, as they did not know the concept of place value , they were unsure of who has to pay for the trip. CAN YOU HELP THE 4 FRIENDS TO FIND OUT WHO HAS TO PAY FOR THE MRT TRIP AND DO THEY HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY FOR IT?

And the answer to the question is… Brad the Giraffe and Dan the Zebra! And how do we know this? By comparing the numbers by its place value.
