DBSA Dreams… : DBSA Dreams… Slide 2: “Begin with the end in mind.” --Stephen Covey "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." --Henry David Thoreau "The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going." -Ralph Waldo Emerson "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."--Eleanor Roosevelt "If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."-- Henry David Thoreau Examples from Experts : Examples from Experts Example 1: What is my wildest dream for a DBSA Chapter? First, I would like to see every chapter have their own office space that is warm and comfortable. A house setting is perfect. They could hold meetings in their space and members would feel comfortable and it would attract many new chapters. Second, when they get their office space, which should be on a major road and not hidden in a building, I would love to see a large sign with the DBSA logo so that everyone in the city who travels that major road will see DBSA, wonder who it is and maybe stop through. Members of DBSA and mental health community leaders will see the sign and know that DBSA has arrived! Third, once chapters have their office and their sign, I would like to see them have a $100,000 budget. Some of it will be for operating expenses. Some will be for special programs like WRAP to do in their communities and other worthwhile programs. This funding would come from their state mental health board and would be renewed yearly. I would also love to see DBSA chapters as the major mental health organization in their community where people come to them for all of their mood disorders needs etc. I would love to see that $100,000 budget double after lobbying the state mental health boards. Examples from Experts… : Examples from Experts… Example 2: If there were no barriers, we would have a small office where people could come, view materials, volunteer with new inquires & be able to see some of the video's that DBSA provides. We would also be able to own some things, desks, computers, telephone, chairs & tables, so that we could have our Monthly Board meeting there instead of going to different places such as libraries etc. Continue to have our monthly educational lectures by Doctors, Lawyers, etc., all are free presentations & open to the public, produce & distribute our Newsletter & even have a column in the local newspaper, kind of like ask the person who has been there. Participate in events like Bipolar awareness Day & Mental Health Month. Continue on with our weekly support groups as we do now, which are 8 different locations in the area & expand to more so that everyone in the community would be served who needs them. In addition, make regular appearances in High School, & universities, increase membership & continue to make the community aware of the lives there are lost each year to mental illness And last but not least, continue to recruit new incoming people so that the horizontal base of the organization continues to grow so that it will be here forever. Slide 5: Example 3: My dream is for our DBSA chapter owning and operating an edifice devoted to offering multiple modalities for the benefit of consumers with depression/bipolar disorder. It is meant for socialization, exercise, relaxation, recreation, respite care, education, support, consultation, experience in shared responsibility and employment. This resort encompasses: a Coffee Shop with dining section for socialization and resort income; a Thrift Shop for consumers to shop, get job experience; a Gift Shop; a large Activity Room for Arts, Crafts, and Group Activities; an Auditorium with Track, Basketball Court and Stage for movies, public performances/presentations; a Fitness Equipment Room also with Pool Table; a Swimming Pool and Room for Massage; a Lending Library with Reading Room including computers; a Meditation Room Crisis Respite Area composed of 8 private bedrooms, large lounge, kitchen, dining room, etc. for consumers who are experiencing depression or mania crises. Respite is intended to prevent hospitalization; hopefully the crisis passes over without event. 5 Visiting Rooms to be used for private consultation with peer specialists and chapter support group meetings ; Administrative Offices. Each service has its own specific mission and fulfillment under the umbrella of the entire resorts existence. Have / Do / Become : Have / Do / Become HAVE What tangible things will you have when your dream is fulfilled. What will you own, what will you be able to hold in your hand, what will you be able to physically touch now that your dream is fulfilled? (remember, the possibilities are limitless) Have / Do / Become : Have / Do / Become DO What would your biggest dreams have you DO? What activities, trips, events, conversations, etc. would you DO? Don’t limit yourself, think wildly! Have / Do / Become : Have / Do / Become BECOME Finally, what will you become because your dream has been fulfilled. What will others see you as. How will you view yourself? What have you become as a result of the achievement of your dream? DREAM BIG : DREAM BIG
