Introduction A Dabbawalla ( one who carries the lunch box ), is a person in the Mumbai whose job is to carry and deliver freshly made food from home in lunch boxes to office workers. The Dabbawalla originated in 1880, when India was under British rule. Mission of the Dabbawallas is “to serve their customers on time” 5000 workers moving 2,00,000 lunch boxes everyday

The Prince of Wales himself had visited them when he came down to Mumbai. Dabba Journey The entire system depends on TEAMWORK and meticulous timing. Tiffin's are Collected from homes & taken to nearest Railway Station. Then they are sorted out for area-wise distribution, so that a single Tiffin could change hands 3 to 4 Times in the course of its daily journey The dabbas have distinguishing mark on them, such as a color or symbol. The markings include the rail station to unload the boxes and the building address where the box has to be delivered.

The Indian value system places a great emphasis on home cooked meals, served hot. People do not have enough time to go home for lunch. The tiffin carrier brings the security of an inexpensive, clean, tasty and often still warm, home cooked meal. It is hygienic. Trust and loyalty are the main underpinnings of recruitment. The members meet socially once a month.

Earnings are equally divided among Dabbawalas. The hierarchal structure is clearly defined and bears a strong resemblance to our traditional social system of hierarchy.

No Formal agreement : Even when a new employee is appointed A fixed salary of Rs. 1000 per month is paid to the workers and no other benefits are provided.
