It’s not about the internet, it’s about human behavior. It’s about communication between people that is harmful, purposeful, repeated and intentional. SENDING ABUSIVE TEXT MESSAGES POSTING ABUSIVE COMMENTS MAKING A FAKE PROFILE OR WEB PAGE TO EMBARRASS SOMEONE PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE THEN POSTING UGLY COMMENTS SUPPOSEDLY FROM THEM PUTTING OUT ANOTHER PERSONS PERSONAL ID INFORMATION KIM WESSON TYPES OF CYBERBULLYING : TYPES OF CYBERBULLYING SPREADING RUMORS AND/OR LIES ON THE INTERNET SEXUALLY HARASSING COMMUNICATIONS RIDICULE THREATS OF PHYSICAL VIOLENCE KIM WESSON TAKING UNFLATTERING OR INNAPPROPRIATEPHOTOS THEN POSTING THEM : TAKING UNFLATTERING OR INNAPPROPRIATEPHOTOS THEN POSTING THEM THIS MEANS PHOTOS WHICH ARE TAKEN WITH OR WITHOUT THE VICTIMS KNOWLEDGE KIM WESSON DOING THESE THINGS WITH A CELL PHONE IS THE SAME AS USING A COMPUTER : DOING THESE THINGS WITH A CELL PHONE IS THE SAME AS USING A COMPUTER KIM WESSON WHY IS IT A GROWING PROBLEM : WHY IS IT A GROWING PROBLEM PEOPLE, including students, have a growing access to the internet and other forms of technology by which they can access the internet. KIM WESSON CYBERBULLIES DO NOT FIT ONE PARTICULAR CATEGORY : CYBERBULLIES DO NOT FIT ONE PARTICULAR CATEGORY KIM WESSON CYBERBULLYING IS AGAINST THE LAW. : CYBERBULLYING IS AGAINST THE LAW. SO JUST DON’T DO IT. KIM WESSON WHAT IF YOU ARE BULLIED? : WHAT IF YOU ARE BULLIED? You need to tell parents and teachers. 58% of bullied students do not tell. Most report they do not tell for fear they will lose access to the internet. Some are accessing the internet/technology without parents’ knowledge. KIM WESSON :  DO NOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION REMEMBER, IF YOU WOULD NOT SAY IT IN PERSON DON’T SAY IT ONLINE * IF YOU WOULDN’T SAY IT WITH THE POLICE PRESENT, DON’T SAY IT ONLINE AVOID SHARING YOUR PASSWORD KIM WESSON DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN “TEXT FIGHTS” : DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN “TEXT FIGHTS” They can escalate. Remember, the person communicating with you online is a REAL PERSON. Slide 15: HOW mature is that anyway? Angry, embarassed, confused, afraid or frustrated KIM WESSON CYBERBULLYING influences the school environment : CYBERBULLYING influences the school environment Students cannot concentrate when they feel harassed or threatened. Disagreements which begin on the internet are continued in school. Being a victim of cyberbullying can be emotionally and/or psychologically damaging. If you are a student who is a victim of cyberbullying, go to your teacher, counselor, or school administrator. They will help you.
