Cures for Common Pitfalls of Nontraditional Students
Perhaps you've struggled with one or more of these common pitfalls that can sink a nontraditional student. The major ones I see are:
***Trying to do everything yourself
***Trying to do everything you've always done
***Trying to do things the old way
Trying to Do Everything Yourself
The cure to this is... not surprisingly... to learn to let go and let others do for you and for themselves. Kids use the bathroom sink to wash their hands and rinse their toothbrush, they use the potty, well, for a couple of things, and they use the bathtub for bathing. There's no reason why they can't or shouldn't help clean that room.
Trying to Do Everything You've always Done
The cure here is to realize that you'll have to give up some things in your life to make room for your new commitments. Figure out which activities you can let go of completely, which ones you can modify and keep, and which ones you are adamant about keeping as is.
Trying to Do Things the Old Way
The cure here is to be open to new ways of doing things. Realize that, yes, it may take time to create those menus you've been promising for years that you'd create so you don't continue to struggle week after week. But, once they are completed they'll save time and aggravation for years to come.
That saved time can be reinvested into studying or spending time with your family. Find new and time-saving ways of doing housework. Also, try new ways and find what works for you to enable you to concentrate while you study.

Perhaps you've struggled with one or more of these common pitfalls that can sink a nontraditional student. The major ones I see are: ***Trying to do everything yourself ***Trying to do everything you've always done ***Trying to do things the old way Overcoming these common pitfalls is essential to your success in college as a nontraditional student. Trying to Do Everything Yourself  The cure to this is... not surprisingly... to learn to let go and let others do for you and for themselves. Kids use the bathroom sink to wash their hands and rinse their toothbrush, they use the potty, well, for a couple of things, and they use the bathtub for bathing. There's no reason why they can't or shouldn't help clean that room. (c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com

They don't want to help? That's easy to fix... find what motivates them and then use it against them mercilessly. But, seriously, most kids will want to help when they understand what you're doing and why. It just may not occur to them to pitch in unless asked. Trying to Do Everything You've always Done  The cure here is to realize that you'll have to give up some things in your life to make room for your new commitments. Figure out which activities you can let go of completely, which ones you can modify and keep, and which ones you are adamant about keeping as is. In my case, I never was much of a TV watcher so that was easy to give up. I had a monthly family dinner as well as a monthly girls' lunch out with 9-12 family members such as daughters, nieces, sisters, sistersin-law, and our mother. My participation in these may have to be modified depending on if I could get away from studying (only because it always fell on a day when I had class that evening). Church, on the other hand, I didn't want to give up or modify the amount of time I spent there. If the doors were open I wanted to be there. You'll have to come up with your own list. If there's something you really want to keep doing then see if you can somehow incorporate it into your life. For instance, I love to walk for an hour per day. In the hectic life of a nontraditional student one would think that would be a luxury that would need to be pushed aside but… when necessary… I used it as a study hour by taking along flash cards or a recorded lecture. Another example is recording your favorite shows to watch later after you've studied hard and aced those mid-terms or finals. Even I did that.
