In a business that is constantly changing, we at CTAM Texas will work to be a constant for our members within the whirlwind of change. Among our chapter goals for the year, we will work to provide “state of the art” communications to members and “break through” chapter events. Most importantly, we will continue on our mission to provide our members with valuable opportunities to learn, network and have some good ole’ Texas fun!   On February 25th, don’t miss our Hot Topix panel at the Texas Show. It’s guaranteed to make you sweat! The important panel discussion , “Beyond Chips and Salsa: Spiced up marketing to the new Majority Minority”, will feature Lynette Pinto, VP Marketing-NBC Cable Networks; Clark Ortiz, President-La Familia Network; Jessica Pantanini, VP/Media Director-Bromley Communications; Doug Darfield, VP Hispanic Media Research-Nielsen & Jeff Henry, VP Sales & Marketing-Time Warner Cable San Antonio, TX.   Other 2004 upcoming chapter events include: A spring educational event built around what is hot and creating buzz within the industry. Within this session, we will focus on how our chapter member’s business fits into our ever changing cable & telecommunications industry. In June, the 12 Annual CTAM /WICT TX Dru Strange Charity Golf Tournament will be held. Stay tuned for date and location. And how can we go into fall without our 3rd Annual Chili Cook off? Get the aprons and ladles ready! In October, we will co-host the CTAM Tele-Seminar with CTAM National. More details to follow. And last, but certainly not least, we will once again co-host, with WICT, the annual holiday party in December.   We have a great year planned and I look forward to working with all of you in 2004.   Kim Francis, IFC/Mag Rack President CTAM Texas 2nd Annual CTAM Texas Chili Cook-Off : 2nd Annual CTAM Texas Chili Cook-Off CTAM of Texas Quarterly The heavens opened up the night before the event and all participants were gearing up for a muddy and wet cook-off. The good Lord provided and the only adjustment we had to make was to move our event from the grassy knolls of The Westin Stonebriar Resort to the upper patio. Teams and competition were tight but everyone was wonderfully accommodating. For our second annual TX CTAM Chili Cook Off in Dallas, TX, we had 17 teams cooking and 50 individuals that filled the arena. All 150 people had a wonderful time fraternizing with fellow industry cohorts over fiery chili and Texas beverages, all to benefit the American Heart Association. The teams were decked out in marvelous themes and the air was thick with fierce cook off competition and smack talking. So many wonderful costumed teams dictated two tiers of judging. The chili and themes were judged by world renowned Texas Chili connoisseurs Paul Maxwell (Texas’ own Cable fax writer) , Johnny Mankin (TW Waco division president) and fill in Andy Parrott from Charter Fort Worth. 3 additional awards, The People’s Choice Awards ,were judged by fellow participants. Judges awards: Best chili: Discovery/Cox Hotter Than Texas Best theme: Showtime/Sundance SHO-down at the Sundance Corral People’s choice awards: Best chili: Tribune Media The Chiliritas Best costumes: Turner/CableONE Powder Puff Chili Cafe Best unusual chili: CBC Crazy Cajuns The event was supported by many non cooking sponsors including WGN, CMT, GAC, Daystar, Comcast, The Football Network, INSP, ESPN, Turner and American Express. Students from SMU’s graduate Media program enjoyed a business networking opportunity. We were very fortunate to be entertained by GAC’s Texas talent Blaine Gray who was a shoe-in for George Strait. CMT co-sponsored the talent. CTAM TX made a $2,000 donation to the American Heart Association. We were told by the AHA representative that we were allowed to eat beef, cheese and Fritos “in moderation”. CTAM TX is thrilled with the success of this event made possible by the teams of programmers and operators that put their heart and soul into cooking and competing with outrageous booths. This event will be moving to Austin, TX next October so …..stay tuned Chili Cook-Off WinnersJudges Awards : Chili Cook-Off WinnersJudges Awards CTAM of Texas Quarterly Best Chili – CHILIRITAS – Tribune Media Jill Greer, Gary Morrison, Lisa Brincks (green hat), Viki Craig (purple hat), Cheryl Gibson, Tracy Jones Best Theme – SHO-DOWN AT THE SUNDANCE CORRAL Kim Kass, Danny Chin, Brent Cherry, Patrick Jacobs, Jaqueline Ridell, Karen Cantrell Palmer Chili Cook-Off WinnersPeople’s Choice Awards : Chili Cook-Off WinnersPeople’s Choice Awards Best Chili – HOTTER THAN TEXAS – Discovery/Cox John Kirkpatrick, Suzanne Calloway, Mike Mulcahy, Candace Storey, Genia Edelman Best Theme – POWDER PUFF CHILI CAFÉ – Jennifer Iras, Wendy Tobias, Donna Perry – CableONE, Christina Stewart, Tracy Anderson – Canopy Partners Best Alternative Chili – CRAZY CAJUNS Emma Alvarez, Lyle McGee, Johnny Mankin, Mark Elliott, Victoria Milner, Andy Parrot – Charter Ft. The Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum was transformed into a casino and lounge. Guests purchased chips at the door and then perused the tables looking for the right place to make their mark.   Once they gathered their winnings, which were awarded in raffle tickets, they sashayed over to the lounge for some refreshments. There, they relaxed while watching the fabulous Pistol Pete emcee the evening in his infamous lounge lizard repertoire.   After the entertaining floorshow, everyone browsed the long line of prizes donated from the various networks. They placed their tickets that they won from the tables in the drawing for the items they wanted the most. Pistol Pete and Genia Edelman from Discovery Networks drew the tickets, announced the winners and awarded the prizes.   After the tables closed and the prizes were gone, the guests danced the night away and took home a memory of the evening on their photo button.    Thanks to the hard work of our dedicated committee and to all of the sponsors, CTAM TX & WICT raised $3,000 and received $9,100 in sponsorships from the holiday party.
