THE LAW ON WASTE All wastes are subject to a DUTY OF CARE on everyone involved in handling the waste from the person who produces it through to the person who finally disposes of, or recovers it. www.diemltd.co.uk

We can’t change the law so make legal compliance work If we don’t have correct documentation: How can we check we are not being overcharged? How can we demonstrate compliance to clients & EA? How can we plan to manage and minimise future waste? www.diemltd.co.uk

We can only plan and measure from a known baseline So accurate records are vital. How much waste is measurable in pricing an delivering works in: 3 Yard 4 Yard 6 Yard 8 Yard 10 Yard 12 Yard 20 Yard Ro Ro 50 Yard Ro Ro Skips? www.diemltd.co.uk

Metal Stone Wood Segregation of waste on site is saving money on this Elevate East Lancashire site Metal Landfill tax £2.50/te Stone Landfill tax £2.50/te Wood Landfill tax £40/te www.diemltd.co.uk

Segregation is the best option if we have the space. www.diemltd.co.uk

Sadly, we don’t live in an ideal world or work on perfect sites www.diemltd.co.uk

Lack of space does not mean a lack of waste separation www.diemltd.co.uk

If we don’t have correct documentation: How can we check we are not being overcharged? How can we demonstrate compliance to clients & EA? How can we plan to manage and minimise future waste? Check your records Waste separation is not an exact science Work with your waste contractor or find one that will work with you www.diemltd.co.uk

Now we know what waste we are producing, what do we do with the information? You know what you are spending on waste You can price waste into projects more accurately You can demonstrate compliance and performance at tender Demonstrate continual improvement www.diemltd.co.uk

“ I’m a subcontractor, I don’t write Site Waste Management Plans” Scenario 1 www.diemltd.co.uk

“ I’m a main contractor, I don’t want to write a SWMP”” As from April 2008, Site Waste Management Plans are a legal minimum requirement in England for construction projects costing more than £300,000 excluding VAT under the Site Waste Management Plan Regulations 2008. Scenario 2 www.diemltd.co.uk

“ My project’s less than £300,000- Would a SWMP work for me?” ….Yes You know what you are spending on waste You can price waste into projects more accurately You can demonstrate compliance and performance at tender Demonstrate continual improvement Scenario 3 www.diemltd.co.uk

….Yes

You know what you are spending on waste

You can price waste into projects more accurately

You can demonstrate compliance and performance at tender

Opportunities for use of recycled materials need to be started at project conceptualisation stage……… …a later start may end up in waste minimisation being time versus money “ When should I start planning for waste?” The earlier you start the earlier you can look at options & work with the EA on exemptions. www.diemltd.co.uk

Communication is the key through the project for effective waste management www.diemltd.co.uk
