Biomedical research may focus on genetics, infectious diseases, acute and chronic conditions, and disabilities that differ in incidence, prevalence, sex-linked traits, or risk factors. Clinical research may include sex or gender-based differences in diagnosis and treatment of disease and disabilities. Health services and policy research may include sex and gender differences in access to appropriate health services, health service use, health promotion strategies, and influences on programs and policies. Population health research includes gender-based health disparities grounded in inequities for vulnerable populations and marginalized groups. Sex and gender differences in health experience across the life span, including healthy child development, healthy aging, mental health, reproductive and sexual health, and work, leisure and health are relevant foci.
