Slide1:  Grab a Graph-STAT!Graphing and Statistics:  Grab a Graph-STAT! Graphing and Statistics A Collaboratory Project for 6th Grade Math Students Manager: Kay Collins McHenry Middle School Kcollins@d15.org Grab a Graph - STAT!:  Grab a Graph - STAT! Making sense of the World of Data began with a graphing unit Students learned to read and interpret graphs, as well as, show trends and relationships in data Next, began the fun part - an Online Survey! What did we want to learn about other students our age?:  What did we want to learn about other students our age? Did they really know their classmates? Were all 6th graders alike? Now was their chance to find out! Using Inspiration software, the class brainstormed topics to use in survey questions. Questions started flying…:  Questions started flying… Students were divided into 16 groups. Each group came up with 10 possible survey questions. Teacher evaluation was used to narrow the questions down to three of their best. No duplicates were allowed. Our TIC paved the way...:  Our TIC paved the way... She set up groups. She created a direction sheet for students, and she demonstrated how to 'Create a Survey' in Survey Studio. Day 1 - Laptop Lab - each group put their questions into Survey Studio. Surveys were now on the Web:  Surveys were now on the Web Day 2 - The class then responded to each other’s surveys. “Let’s see what is happening!”:  'Let’s see what is happening!' Day 3 - Groups then viewed the results and shared their observations so far. More Students were invited...:  More Students were invited... Other classes of 6th graders were then invited to answer our survey questions. With the help of our TIC, the process was quick and results were growing rapidly. Students were continuously checking their graphs to see the number of participants. What did we learn?:  What did we learn? Not all of the graphs worked correctly. Some of the results turned out like we predicted, but some of them surprised us! We learned that we could share our information quickly in several ways - bar graphs, circle graphs, and tables. We then presented our results to the class. What is your favorite color?:  What is your favorite color? What color of eyes do you have?:  What color of eyes do you have? How many books do you read a month?:  How many books do you read a month? Who is your favorite author?:  Who is your favorite author? What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?:  What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? How many hours per day do you watch TV?:  How many hours per day do you watch TV? Where do you like to shop?:  Where do you like to shop? What do you eat for breakfast?:  What do you eat for breakfast? What kind of cheese do you like?:  What kind of cheese do you like? Now what?:  Now what? We used our graphs in our next unit on Oral Traditions. We each created a museum display to show 'Adolescents of Today'. Many of their graphs were used as statistical data. What else did the future bring?:  What else did the future bring? We studied the Stock Market and graphed company stock prices. We could show trends and relationships in data. Hopes for the future...:  Hopes for the future... We hope to display our stock graphs in Media Space. Recognizing propaganda in ads and misleading graphs will help us in the real world. We will be using graphing in our Probability unit. We will become leaders in the world of data! Questions?:  Questions? Thank you!
