Cognitive theory : Cognitive theory From, Manjula Roy Cognitive theory : Cognitive theory Cognitive theory is a learning theory of psychology that attempts to explain human behaviour by understanding the thought processes. Pure cognitive theory largely rejects behaviourism on the basis that behaviourism reduces complex human behaviour to simple cause and effect. Social Cognitive Perspective : Social Cognitive Perspective Social cognitive theory—the importance of observational learning, conscious cognitive processes, social experience, self-efficacy and reciprocal determinism in personality. Reciprocal determinism-model that explains personality as the result of behavioral, cognitive, and environmental interactions. Self-efficacy—belief that people have about their ability to meet demands of a specific situation Reciprocal Determinism—Albert Bandura : Reciprocal Determinism—Albert Bandura Applications : Applications Social Cognitive Theory is applied today in many different arenas. Mass media, public health, education, and marketing are just a very few. An example of this is the use of celebrities to endorse and introduce any number of products to certain demographics: one way in which social cognitive theory encompasses all four of these domains. By choosing the proper gender, age, and ethnicity the use of social cognitive theory could help ensure the success of an AIDS campaign to inner city teenagers by letting them identify with a recognizable peer, have a greater sense of self-efficacy, and then imitate the actions in order to learn the proper preventions and actions for a more informative AIDS aware community. Cognitive theories of learning : Cognitive theories of learning Broadly, cognitive theory is interested in how people understand material, and thus in;  aptitude and capacity to learn (thus fringing onto psychometrics and testing),  and learning styles (the reference is to one of the few apparently valid styles: see here for a corrective view! and here for a slightly more balanced one).  It is also the basis of the educational approach known asconstructivism, which emphasises the role of the learner in constructing his own view or model of the material, and what helps with that. Slide 7: to overcome his fears before his first spaceflight. According to Social Cognitive Theory, interactive learning allows students to gain confidence through practice. A spacedog can practice spacewalks using simulators to overcome his fears before his first spaceflight. Cognitive theory of motivation : Cognitive theory of motivation There are two different forms of cognitive motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation refers to tasks that are rewarding in and of themselves, such as the pleasure of solving a puzzle, learning, or playing a game. The motivating factors for taking such actions are not external, but internal. Extrinsic motivation is the opposite and involves engaging in a task because of external factors. This can mean working for money and food, or it can involve taking actions to avoid harm. Slide 9: THANK YOU
