As children advance as readers, they need to practice using important details, word meanings, and text structures to examine increasingly difficult text. Close activities provide this practice. With each reading, children should learn and understand more about the text.

Close Reading Close reading is a strategy used to teach children how to examine the meaning of complex text. Children are expected to: reread the text several times answer text dependent questions provided by the teacher infer meaning provide evidence from the text to support their answers

Close Reading Close reading refers to detailed reading. Similar to detectives, children learn to pay close attention to clues in the text to examine the information or message shared by the author. topic clue words and relationships organization of text structures

Close Reading Features of Close Reading: begin with a short non-fiction passage. ask a text dependent question for each reading have your child prove his/her answer by showing evidence from the passage Suggestion- Have your child circle, highlight, and underline clue words

Practice - Close Reading Activity Features: Short non-fiction passage People often confuse frogs with toads. Ask a text dependent question for each reading: 1. What is the topic of the passage? What is it about? 2. What does the author want you to understand about this topic? What is the author’s purpose for writing the passage? 3. Show how this is explained? Have your child show proof of his/her answers Both frogs and toads are amphibians. Like frogs, toads have short bodies and wide heads. They differ in their skin texture. Frogs have smooth, moist skin; whereas, toads have rough, dry skin. Unlike frogs, toads walk; they don’t hop.
