Slide 6: Ch20 = Cities of refuge Extends = God reiterates his claim on the Land by reinstating his command to Moses for the cities of refuge! NUMBERS 35:6 “…cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee. 10-12 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: `select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone accidentally may flee. They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that a person accused of murder may not die before he stands trial before the assembly. 25 The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send him back to the city of refuge to which he fled. Slide 7: Ch20 = Cities of refuge Extends (V1-3)= God reiterates his claim on the Land by reinstating his command to Moses for the cities of refuge! God is the Law giver & Moral arbiter of his people. Slide 8: Ch20 = Cities of refuge Underlines (v4-7)= God outlines HIS legal policy, mercy, consequences, redemption and restoration to his home. Slide 9: Ch20 = Cities of refuge The power of blood, God’s justice system is quite basic, blood for blood (Lev 24:17-22 Numbers 35:16-24) 17 " `If anyone takes the life of a human being, he must be put to death. 18 Anyone who takes the life of someone's animal must make restitution--life for life. 19 If anyone injures his neighbor, whatever he has done must be done to him: 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he has injured the other, so he is to be injured. 21 Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a man must be put to death. 22 You are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born. I am the LORD your God.' “ Leviticus 24 Slide 10: Ch20 = Cities of refuge The power of blood, God’s justice system is quite basic, blood for blood (Lev 24:17-22 Numbers 35:16-24) 16 " `If a man strikes someone with an iron object so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death. 17 Or if anyone has a stone in his hand that could kill, and he strikes someone so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death. 18 Or if anyone has a wooden object in his hand that could kill, and he hits someone so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death. 19 The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death. 20 If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at him intentionally so that he dies 21 or if in hostility he hits him with his fist so that he dies, that person shall be put to death; he is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him. NU 35:22 " `But if without hostility someone suddenly shoves another or throws something at him unintentionally 23 or, without seeing him, drops a stone on him that could kill him, and he dies, then since he was not his enemy and he did not intend to harm him, 24 the assembly must judge between him and the avenger of blood according to these regulations Leviticus 24 Slide 11: Ch20 = Cities of refuge The power of blood, God’s justice system is quite basic, blood for blood (Lev 24:17-22 Numbers 35:16-24) put to death; he is a murderer. Slide 13: Mercy Consequence Redemption Restoration Hebrew = Joshua Greek = Jesus Slide 14: SO WHAT can we learn from the division of Cannan This is God’s land; He has a moral claim to it, they are only lodgers (Parable of the Vineyard = Matt 21, Mark 12) God ways are different from our ways; His concept of justice is both bigger and more generous than our’s! (Isaiah 55:8) …without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness (Heb 9:22) – we don’t need to become a redeemer, because we already have one!!!
