Slide8:  ... how musicians create and remember all 12 Major & minor Scales of Music? ... how many notes in a key are sharps or flats? ... which notes are in the scale of any key? ... which notes in a key are sharp or flat? Have you ever wondered... Slide9:  My Circle of Fifths™ Book & Clock will teach you how to create and remember all the 12 Major & minor scales of music! Slide10:  To make it simple for you to do all the above, the Bird maestro and I have written a Book describing the Musical Circle of Fifths & we also created an elegant and simple Optional Clock version of the logical time-honored technique, "The Circle of Fifths," created in 1728 by Johann D. Heinichen. Heinichen’s work, was based on the the Fifth Century BC work of Pythagoras, the famous Greek Mathematician. Wonder no longer! Slide11:  How does it work? Envisage our our Circle of Fifths Clock as a Keyboard Slide12:  Start at middle “C” (no sharps/no flats), move clockwise around our Circle of Fifths™ Clock dial face, or up the keyboard a “Perfect Fifth”, which is seven one half steps. The Circle of Fifths rule; is that for each clockwise step around the Circle (or our Clock), (Ex. from C to G). the number of sharps in the key signature i.e. the Key of G, increases by one. Thus a fifth above C is G and the key of G will have one sharp, i.e. one more sharp than the key of C (which has no sharps). A fifth above G is D and the key of D will have two sharps, i.e. one more sharp than the key of G. Slide13:  So, at the 1 o’clock position of our clock you will find the key of G which is a fifth above the key of C The Circle of Fifths, tells us, the key of G will have one more sharp than the key of C (the previous key). The additional note you sharp is the 7th note in the key of G Scale, which is F Slide14:  Key of G has 1 sharp, F# Bird Maestro will show you how his Book and Clock teaches you to create and remember all the 12 Major & minor scales of music! Slide15:  The notes of the key of C are: C D E F G A B (no sharps & no flats) The notes of the key of G are: G A B C D E F# (one sharp & no flats)‏ To summarize: The notes of the key of D are: D E F# G A B C# (two sharp & no flats)‏ Slide16:  The Circle of Fifths mathematical process repeats itself as you continue clockwise around the Clock Circle or up the keyboard, thus the next key on the Circle of Fifths path is the key of D, which has two sharps, F sharp & C sharp (i.e. one more Sharp than the key of G)‏ If you progress counterclockwise around the Clock Circle or down the keyboard, the Circle of Fifths Concept applies, but you add Flats instead of Sharps Slide17:  Our Circle of Fifths Book Describes in Text & numerous Graphics, the History, & Theory of the Circle of Fifths concept & its many other uses as it relates to music. There is nothing to compare with the Circle of Fifths as an aid in creating & remembering all the 12 Major and minor scales of music.. Slide18:  Our optional Circle of Fifths Clock™dial face converts the Circle of Fifth Concept & Mathematical rules described in our Book, into a complete and elegant visual display of all the Major & minor scales of music, and shows which keys are sharp or flat. Slide19:  Our Circle of Fifths™ dial face also shows which minor keys are relative to the major keys The Clock dial face Shows that the key of A minor is relative to The key of C Major Key of A minor The key of A minor scale is A B C D E F G Relative to C Major Slide20:  If you combine a keyboard... Slide21:  ...with the Circle of Fifths Concept... Slide22:  ...and compare them with the linear equivalent of the Circle of Fifths... Slide23:  ...here is what the comparison would look like! Slide24:  280 years ago, the Circle of Fifths looked like this: Slide25:  Today, the Circle of Fifths can look like this on your wall or near your musical instrument: Slide26:  My Book discusses & explains the History & Concepts of the Circle of Fifths and how these concepts can help you create and remember all 12 Major & minor scales of music! It offers visual clues about a number of musical aspects including key signatures, harmonic relationships, and chord progressions. Familiarity with the circle can help the music student grasp some of the basic principles of western music. The circle of fifths is an abstract idea intended to portray musical relationships. This is not a new idea – various methods have been in place since at least the time of the ancient Greeks. Many of these methods had a mathematical foundation, revealing the close relationship between numbers and sound. This relationship is so close that the two subjects were traditionally considered to be fundamentally connected – musicians and mathematicians were thought to be one and the same. Although the prominence of mathematics in music subsided somewhat since the time of the Baroque, it has always been important to music theorists. To the present day sound remains a fascinating subject for many mathematicians who have made significant contributions to our modern principals of tuning. The Musical Circle of Fifths Pythagoras to Present Day William Byrne Slide31:  The “fifths” of the circle of fifths refers to the number of steps from one note to the next as you progress around the circle. C is customarily at the 12 o’clock position and the note in the 1 o’clock position is G. There are five steps between C and G (counting C as 1) so the distance between these two notes is a fifth. A fifth above G is D (G, A, B, C, D), and a fifth above D is A. We continue going up a fifth from the previous note and finally end up back at C. Each step around the circle must be a perfect fifth – so a fifth up from B is F# (or Gb). Steps We referred to steps in the last section as the interval between two notes. We said that there are 5 steps between C and G. While this is true if we simply count letters in the alphabet, musical steps are a bit different. Western music divides an octave (from C to C for example) into 12 equal steps. If you examine a piano keyboard you can see that there are 12 steps (counting both black and white keys) from middle C to the C an octave higher. The number of steps between each pair of notes varies – from C to D is 2 steps (C#, D) but there is just one step between E and F. Sample pages from the Book.
