Limerick School Lunch Program: Limerick School Lunch Program Christine Gurnett, MINDI RD LDN Senior Community Dietitian HSE ‘Tackling Childhood Food Poverty’ Nov. 30th 2006, Croke Park, Dublin HSE Community Dietitian : HSE Community Dietitian Provide expert guidance on menu planning (DoH - Children's Food Pyramid and Primary School Food Guidelines) Provide advice + support efforts to increase parental + student involvement in project Facilitate development of Healthy Eating Policies and integration of nutrition education into curriculum Work with local and commercial suppliers, schools, EHOs and project co-ordinator (PP) to facilitate quality assurance of project Basic Cold Lunch Option:: Basic Cold Lunch Option: Roll or Sandwich with butter, low-fat spread or mayo Meat, cheese, tuna or other filling 1 piece of fresh fruit 100% Pure fruit juice Snack options – Cheese Stixs/Bel/sq., fruit bag/cup, rice cakes, popcorn, cereal bar, yogurt drink and other healthy options Initial involvement:: Initial involvement: 17 schools in Limerick city and environs with designated disadvantaged status Total student population ~ 3,000 Funding available to school from Dept of S&FA €2.00 per child per day for cold lunch and a snack Bun & Milk scheme (Limerick City Council) Paul Partnership (LES) facilitate initial start-up and application for funding Project started 2003:: Project started 2003: Sept/Oct - Commercial supplier Corpus Christie N.S. (Moyross) Started with small charge /low uptake Free to all – full uptake of 430 students Nov - Presentation N.S. joined program Total of 764 students in 2 schools supplied by Carambola Kidz (commercial supplier) Jan 2004 to July 2006:: Jan 2004 to July 2006: Feb 04 – 3 more schools joined Supplier for 1 school - Limerick Youth Service Supplier for 2 schools - Carambola Kidz March 04 – Gaelscoil Sheoirse Clancy, Southill Supplier - FAS project (Southill House) March 04 - Our Lady of Lourdes + School for Deaf Children Supplier - Our Lady of Lourdes Community Centre 1 paid worker + 1 volunteer Jan 2004 – July 2006 (Cont.): Jan 2004 – July 2006 (Cont.) St Mary’s BNS + Convent of Mercy Supplier - Local community group Southill Junior School established scheme linking in with overall program Supplier - Local community group 5 other schools joined Supplier - Carrambola Kidz Nov 2006: Nov 2006 Program successfully running 3 years 17 primary schools with ~ 3,000 students getting universal free school lunches 7 community based schemes supply 9 schools Commercial supplier provides to 8 schools Challenges: Challenges Providing new options to prevent boredom and preserve or increase nutrient content of food on offer Re-educating taste away from high salt/fat/sugar both in school and home environment Facilitating the other than ‘food costs’ hidden in this program (within the school and for volunteer or community groups) How can these children be provided for once they progress into post-primary schools
