CHOOSING YOUR SOLICITOR • Every individual is likely to require the help of a solicitor at some point during their lifetime • Choosing the right solicitor to help you with your individual needs can be stressful and difficult • Understanding how solicitors work can make it easier to select the most appropriate man or woman for your individual case

QUALIFICATIONS • All privately practicing solicitors must hold a practising certificate issued by the Solicitors Regulation Authority • Before any information is shared, you should ensure that the solicitor you are intending to use can show you evidence of this certificate • Think of this as a guarantee that the company or individual you are dealing with is authorised and qualified to engage in such practices

BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP • It is important to consider how comfortable you feel sharing information with the solicitor at hand • You should feel relaxed around them and be able to share information freely • If your first impressions of the solicitor make you feel slightly uneasy, then you may find the process more difficult than necessary • By finding a friendly and helpful solicitor that you feel at ease around in the first instance, you will acquire a relationship that you can value for life

AREA OF LAW • Make sure that you are seeking the correct type of legal help from the right person • Whilst many solicitors do have a wide range of knowledge to suit numerous cases, it is becoming more and more common for solicitors to specialise in one or two areas of law • It is therefore best to find someone that suits your exact needs

OTHER FACTORS • Other logistical factors should also be thought about • Consider how close and accessible the solicitor is to you • Take into account how easy it will be to make an appointment and how responsive your individual solicitor is, to ensure that you receive the best service possible
