© Copyright 2013 The Detail Devils ® Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to protective attire, helmets, goggles, or other equipment intended to protect the wearer's body from harm. The hazards addressed by PPE include heat, physical, chemical, electrical, and airborne particles. The purpose of PPE is to minimise worker exposure to hazards when working and executive controls are not practicable or effective enough to reduce these risks to appropriate levels. www.thedetaildevils.com.au

Head protection - a safety helmet must be worn where a person may be struck on the head by a falling object, strike his/her head against a fixed object or inadvertently come into contact with electrical hazards. Eye protection: - Typical hazards might include flying particles, dust, splashing substances, harmful gases, vapours, aerosols, and high intensity radiation from welding operations, lasers, trans-illuminators and strong heat sources. www.thedetaildevils.com.au

Hand and arm protection – Hand and arm protection may be required while handling abrasive, sharp or pointed objects or while working with vibrating equipment, such as pneumatic drills. Body protection - Body protection may include, overalls, aprons, coveralls, life jackets, harnesses and back supports. www.thedetaildevils.com.au

Workers who are required to work outdoors and are subjected to the sun's rays should also wear skin protection to reduce exposure to UVR. Respiratory protection –This type of PPE is worn when harmful dust, fumes or vapours are present in the workplace. www.thedetaildevils.com.au

Head protection - includes industrial scalp protectors, which are designed to protect from knocking against stationary objects, caps/hair nets and industrial safety helmets, which are primarily designed to protect against materials falling from a height. www.thedetaildevils.com.au

Foot protection – including anti-static and conductive footwear, safety boots or shoes and Wellington boots, all of which can be supplied with steel toe-caps. Skin protection –including hats, sunburn cream, long sleeved clothes. Respiratory protection - There are primarily 2 types of Respiratory PPE. They are respirators that supply clean air (such as airline respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus) and respirators that filter contaminated air (such as dust masks, gas filters and particle filters). www.thedetaildevils.com.au
© Copyright 2013 The Detail Devils ® When choosing the appropriate PPE for the job the selection process must include consulation with users and consider these: • compatibility of PPE items where more multiple types of PPE are needed (for example a hard had with ear muffs) • preference for PPE that complies with the relevant Australian Standard or equal standard. • conference with the supplier to ensure PPE is appropriate for the work and workplace conditions • a detailed evaluation of the risk and performance requirements for the PPE www.thedetaildevils.com.au
