Common Mistakes What are some common mistakes in a cover letter?
Round 1: Can, Want, Fit 6 minutes Are these 3 questions answered?? Am I a good FIT? Do I WANT the job? CAN I do the job?
Round 2: Formatting
Top section (addressing the employer) Closing • Same as resume: header, margins, font choice and font size • Left-aligned • Address it to who will be reading it: Name, their position title, company address, postal code • Date • Say what you are applying for (i.e. RE: Customer Service Representative) • Don’t indent new paragraphs • “Signed” • Full name typed out, Bcom Candidate 201_, Sauder School of Business • Actual signature is optional (no cursive font) • “Attached:” (e-document) vs. “Enclosure:” (physical copy) • No page numbers
Round 3: The Opening
Round 3: The Opening • Hook: Relevant, short, and not random fact-dropping • Expresses keen and genuine interest and/or passion for position • Makes a clear expression of the skills/experience matching the job description • Primary or secondary research indicating interest in firm that is relevant (not facts that they already know!)
Round 4: Skills Matching
Round 4: Skills Matching • Describes specific skills that are clearly matched to the job description • References specific examples that leverage experiences and qualifications • Experiences highlighted are specific and concise linking past experiences through transferable skills • Results show success or strength in past experiences • Link back to job posting!
Round 5: Closing
Round 5: Closing • Very clear reference to specific skills and interests mentioned in the main body of the CL • Gracious thanks to the employer for their consideration • Confidence shines through
Round 6: Branding
Round 6: Branding • Provides strong, insightful research that demonstrates knowledge and interest in the industry/organization • Illustrates how the candidate will “fit” into the industry /organization • Company and industry specific jargon
Round 7: Integration
Round 7: Integration • All content is appropriate • Best impression of him/herself is displayed • Is the cover letter generic or unique?
