Chiropractic Treatment versus Conventional Treatment

INTRODUCTION  All forms of medical therapy aims to bring relief to a patient. But when it comes to Chiropractic treatment, the approach takes a step ahead and aims to optimize the functionality of whole body. It doesn’t stop at treatment of a specific remedy. It takes whole picture into consideration. And that is why; this alternative medical profession is attracting the interests of many patients. Now, here is a quick look at how chiropractic treatment differs from conventional treatment.

CHIROPRACTIC APPROACH  The first point is approach. What is the first question your regular orthopaedic guy asks you? He may ask about intensity, location and frequency of pain, in other words, he takes the symptomatic approach and believes in medication, which means a chemical treatment of a biochemical problem. As compared to this, a doctor of chiropractic treatment investigates medical history, family history, posture; he also analyzes the affected joint for aberrant motion and resorts to joint manipulation. In other words, a chiropractor looks at the whole picture and takes a biomechanical approach.  The second difference is based on the mode of treatment. This is no rocket science to understand. Now, what usually happens when you complain of back, neck or migraine pain to a doctor? He simply prescribes over-the-counter medicine and in advanced cases he may resort to NSAIDs. Now, NSAIDs have proven long-term side effects for instance ulcers or irritation in stomach and even potential kidney and liver damage. As compared to this, a chiropractic practitioner starts the treatment with physical manipulation of the affected joint. And this he does without prescribing any medicine. A chiropractor resorts to periodic mobilization and therapeutic exercises to reach full joint mobilization.

 Now, there are myths which surround chiropractic profession, one of the most popular being questioning the very premise of medical profession; the chiropractic education and training. So, let us begin with comparing the average hours spent by students in both the schools; and the astonishing fact is that a student in Chiropractic medical schools spends around 4,882 hours in training as compared to conventional student’s 4667 hours. Another important difference is that chiropractic curriculum spends less time on subjects like pharmacology and surgery and instead spends more hours on biomechanics and manual diagnostic and treatment methods for neuromusculoskeletal problems.  Well, the aim of this article isn’t to prove the efficacy of one against the other, the idea behind this is to raise awareness about this totally natural and non-invasive form of medical treatment which opens another door for patients suffering from lifestyle, posture and injury related disorders for instance, lower back pain, headaches, migraines, and other spine related health issues. And it is our firm belief that one day both of these professions will work together and bring a new face to medical profession.
