The ponies on the Spanish galleon if this theory is true, were supposedly going to Peru to work in mines. The second theory is that colonists let their ponies loose to avoid livestock tax. This theory is the most likely of the two. Chincoteague ponies have excelled in the show ring in a variety of disciplines. Some are 16 hands high. Slide 4: About Misty of Chincoteague and her family Misty of Chincoteague was foaled in 1946 on Chincoteague, sired by the Pied Piper, and her dam was the Phantom. Misty was a pinto pony who had a large patch of white shaped like the U.S. She died in 1972. Her body and that of her foal Stormy have been preserved through taxidermy.
