Chemistry of Boron – JEE Main 2014 Anomalous behavior of Boron Boron is the first element of group -13, with electronic configuration 1s2, 2s2 2p1. Boron shows anomalous behavior as compared to other group -13 elements, because of its small size, higher electronegativity, higher ionization enthalpy and diagonal relationship between B and Si. Boron shows anomalous properties as compared to the elements of the group -13 as follows: (1) Boron is a non-metal while other members of the group are metals. (2) Boron has high electronegativity (2.0) and high ionization enthalpy (801 kJ mol-1) (3) Boron has the highest melting point and boiling point. (4) In group -13 only Boron shows allotropy. (Boron exists in crystalline and amorphous forms.) (5) Boron forms only covalent compounds, whereas other members form covalent as well as ionic compounds. (6) Oxides and hydroxides of boron are weakly acidic while those of aluminium are amphoteric and of the remaining elements are weakly basic. (7) Boron hydride is stable whereas hydrides of other elements are less stable. (8) Only boron combines with active metals like magnesium to form borides. (9) Boron shows diagonal relationship with silicon. The Physical properties of Boron are:

(1) Boron is a non-metal. Black coloured solid. (2) It is hard refractory solid of high melting point. (3) Boron forms allotropes. For example, crystalline boron is as hard as diamond and non-reactive while amorphous boron is very reactive. (4) It is a poor conductor of electricity. (5) It is has the highest ionization potential among group -13 elements. (6) It has a small atomic and ionic radii.
