Written text has only support from previous knowledge, spoken language has more meaning-supportive context. Spelling of English does not offer a natural match between written and spoken forms. Literacy is both social and cognitive:  Literacy is both social and cognitive For achieving successful literacy: children must integrate information from each level into a larger process for making sense of a written text. Literacy skills are learnt from all around, and reading and writing are essentially about understanding. Literacy skills broadens as children gradually develop more understanding of how other people think and function, they develop empathy with others. How to support children in mastering the demands of literacy:  How to support children in mastering the demands of literacy Give enough support Be supportive when children move from very contextualised use of language to more isolated, disembedded information in written texts. Teach appropriate spelling conventions and about text organisation. Different strategies are needed for becoming an independent reader:  Different strategies are needed for becoming an independent reader Children need to acquire a wide range of strategies for making sense of different kind of texts. One strategy which suits when dealing with long, unfamiliar words; braking up words into bits ex. wheelchair – wheel chair. This could be done by scaffolding, allowing the child to become more independent. Or by using ZPD, zone of proximal development, for ultimate challenging. Factors effecting learning to read in English as a foreign language are::  Factors effecting learning to read in English as a foreign language are: The nature of the written forms of the 1:st language The learners previous experience in 1:st language literacy The learners knowledge of the 1:st language The learners age Factors effecting learning to read in English as a foreign language::  Factors effecting learning to read in English as a foreign language: Some knowledge are transferable from 1:st L to 2:nd L. BUT, young learners literacy knowledge and skills are only partly developed for the 1:st language It is possible that they will mix knowledge, skills and strategies between languages. Being able to use and understand several genres is an important educational goal, that will empower children for adult life.
