 An associate at Kitsap Family Dentistry in Bremerton, Washington, Douglas Seymour, DDS, has more than 20 years of professional experience. To remain current in his field, Douglas A. Seymour, DDS, has completed hundreds of continuing education hours covering such topics as the role of occlusion in dental care. Occlusion refers to the manner in which teeth come together in the mouth. Occlusion becomes an issue of concern in dentistry when the bite is misaligned and the teeth do not meet in the proper way. This is known as malocclusion, and is more commonly known as overbite or underbite.

 Malocclusion is typically an inherited condition, caused when the genes produce an upper and lower jaw of different sizes. Children born with cleft lip and palate are at particularly high risk. The condition can be exacerbated or even caused by childhood oral fixation habits, such as thumb sucking and extended dependence on a bottle. Extra or unusually shaped teeth may also play a contributing role.

 Individuals with normal bites in childhood may develop malocclusion as a result of injury, poor dental treatment, or disease. Tumors in and around the jaw, for example, may thrust the bones out of alignment. If the malocclusion becomes painful or leads to difficulty in cleaning the teeth, a dental professional may recommend orthodontic or surgical treatment, depending on the severity of the condition.
